Finding the Right RV Park When You Have a Boat

Posted on February 26, 2026August 4, 2026 By Becky

You plan to travel by RV with a boat, so the planning begins! You look forward to the open road and the allure of getting out on the water once you get to the lakeside campground. Not all lakeside sites are designed with boaters in mind, though. Just because it’s close to the water, you can’t assume there’ll be secure slips. If you’re bringing your boat along, choosing the right lakeside RV resort can make all the difference. These tips help you find the right one.

Marina Details and Slips

When RV parks say they have lake access, that can mean anything from a walking trail to the shoreline to a small public boat ramp closeby. It’s not the same as having an on-site marina. A full-service marina within an RV park typically includes dedicated boat slips, private dock space, and an on-site launch ramp. In some cases, there are dock utilities. These things can improve your trip a lot, saving you from driving an hour to a public ramp or a long lineup before launch. You’ll have more time out on the water.

Electrical and Water Hookups

Utilities are important, not just at your campsite but at the dock too. Seemingly small details can make weekend trips and longer stays more enjoyable. Look for full hookups at your RV site. The right one by the lake has 30/50 amp electrical connections, water and sewer hookups, and reliable Wi-Fi.

Having full hookups means you won’t have to conserve power or water. That becomes especially important when you want to run the air conditioning after a long day in the sun or charge multiple devices, such as phones and motor batteries.

Comfy Amenities

The campsite feels more like home with full hookups, as well as clean restrooms and showers to refresh after a long day on the lake. Adding further comfort is a picnic area, if the campground has one, for meals before and after boating. If you bring the dog, look for a pet-friendly spot.

You might also want an RV park with hiking trails. That way, you have activities besides boating. Spots closeby for fishing can also be fun. Maybe there’s even a water park close by. When there’s a lot to do, the kids (and you) never get bored.

Peak Season and Reservations

Traveling with a boat and an RV makes trip planning more involved. Along with reserving a parking spot for the RV, you also want a boat slip. During peak lake season, especially for summer weekends, book early so you don’t miss out on the right RV park and marina. Reserving a waterfront site and a slip 3-6 months in advance during high-demand months (typically May through September) ensures you get what you need. Boat slips are often the first amenity to sell out. You can also expect the holidays to be busy, so book far in advance for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.

When you choose a campground that combines RV accommodations with an adjacent marina and boat slips, you’re well on your way to having an amazing vacation!

Extra Tips for Finding the Perfect RV Park When Travelling With a Boat

Travelling with both an RV and a boat adds an extra layer of logistics, but a few thoughtful checks can prevent stress and make your trip far more relaxing.

Check Launch Ramp Accessibility

Not all ramps are equal. Look into:

  • ramp width and slope

  • whether multiple boats can launch at once

  • water depth during different seasons

  • trailer manoeuvring space

A steep or narrow ramp can quickly turn arrival day into a stressful experience, especially if the area is busy.

Look for Trailer Parking and Storage

Even if a slip is available, you’ll still need somewhere safe to store your trailer. The best RV parks offer:

  • dedicated trailer parking areas

  • security monitoring

  • easy access between the marina and campsite

Without proper storage, you may end up juggling limited space at your campsite.

Consider Security and Safety

Boats and RVs are significant investments, so security matters. Look for:

  • gated park access

  • well-lit marina areas

  • CCTV or staff presence

  • secure dock access

Peace of mind helps you fully relax while exploring or spending time off-site.

Plan for Fuel and Maintenance Access

A nearby fuel dock or marine service centre can be incredibly convenient. Even small things like ice, bait, or emergency supplies being available nearby can save long drives and interruptions to your day on the water.

Think About Weather and Shelter

Wind exposure and water conditions can affect docking comfort. Protected coves, floating docks, and sheltered marina layouts can make overnight docking safer and quieter.

RV + Boat Travel FAQs

Do all lakeside RV parks allow boats?

No — some parks may be close to the water but lack proper boat access, docking, or trailer storage. Always confirm marina availability and boating policies before booking.

Is it better to choose a park with an on-site marina?

Yes, especially for longer stays. An on-site marina reduces travel time, simplifies launching, and allows spontaneous boating without complicated logistics.

How early should I reserve boat slips?

During peak season, slips can book out months in advance. Reserving 3–6 months ahead is recommended, especially for weekends and holidays.

What size boat can most RV park marinas accommodate?

This varies widely. Some marinas are designed for small fishing boats, while others can handle larger pontoons or cruisers. Always confirm size limits and docking requirements.

Is travelling with a boat and RV difficult for beginners?

It can feel overwhelming at first, but choosing parks with good access, clear layouts, and supportive staff makes the experience much easier.

Should I insure my boat differently when travelling?

Check your policy to ensure coverage during towing, docking, and storage outside your home marina. Some insurers require additional travel or storage coverage.

Are pet-friendly RV parks compatible with boating trips?

Many are — just check leash rules, water access safety, and shaded areas for pets while you’re out boating.
