A Family Beach Packing List: Everything You Need for a Stress-Free Day by the Sea Posted on August 6, 2025August 6, 2025 By Becky We absolutely love a family day at the beach, but let’s be real here – getting the family to the beach (with all the right beach bag essentials) is almost an Olympic sport and can be tres stressful! I’ve had my fair share of “oops, we forgot the…” moments – cue kids without hats, missing goggles etc. Over time, I’ve learned that having a solid family beach packing list is the secret to enjoying the day instead of spending it running back to the car or nearby shops. So here it is: a complete, stress-free, tried-and-tested beach packing list for the family – whether you’re heading to a local coastal spot for the day, jetting off on a sunny holiday abroad, or exploring rock pools somewhere rugged and beautiful. Your Ultimate Family Beach Packing List I’ve split this beach bag essentials list into sections to make it easy to follow (and even easier to tick off). You can download my FREE printable here. 1. Beach Bag Essentials This is your “grab and go” set – the stuff you’ll want close to hand all day. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) – Pack one for the whole family and make sure it’s water-resistant. If you have little ones, choose a mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin. Lip balm with SPF – Easy to forget, but sunburnt lips are no fun. Sun hats – Wide-brim hats for little kids, caps for older children and adults. Sunglasses – Polarised ones are a game-changer for glare off the water. Reusable water bottles – Keep everyone hydrated (bonus points if you freeze them overnight so they stay cold). Healthy snacks – Fruit, crackers, or energy bars that won’t melt instantly. Hand sanitiser – Because sandy hands and food are not the best combo. Wet wipes – A beach-day lifesaver for sticky ice cream hands. Small first aid kit – Plasters, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for splinters. 2. Swim & Sun Gear If you’ve got kids, never underestimate how much swim gear they’ll need. Swimwear – Pack at least two sets per child so they can change into dry clothes mid-day. Rash vests – Great for UV protection and avoiding sore shoulders. Beach towels – Oversized and quick-drying are best. Swim nappies – Essential if you’ve got a baby or toddler. Goggles – Stop the “my eyes sting” complaints. Snorkel sets – If your kids are old enough, this keeps them entertained for hours. Flip-flops or water shoes – Protect feet from hot sand, shells, or pebbles. 3. Shade & Comfort Not every beach has natural shade, so it’s worth coming prepared. Beach umbrella or sun shelter – Pop-up tents are brilliant for babies and toddlers. Beach blanket or mat – Waterproof backing is ideal so it doesn’t get soggy. Folding chairs – Optional, but your back will thank you. Lightweight picnic rug – Perfect for snack breaks. 4. Fun & Entertainment Because we all know that while adults could happily read a book for hours, kids… not so much. Beach toys – Buckets, spades, sandcastle moulds, and digging tools. Inflatables – Rings, loungers, or beach balls (don’t forget the pump!). Frisbee or ball games – Great for older kids and family competitions. Kite – Perfect for breezy beach days. Books or magazines – For when you actually get a peaceful moment. 5. Food & Drink Unless you’re buying food nearby, you’ll want to bring a mini feast. Cool bag – Keeps drinks icy cold and sandwiches fresh. Ice packs – Essential if it’s a hot day. Easy-to-eat food – Sandwiches, wraps, pasta salads, chopped fruit. Treats – Because a beach day isn’t complete without a bit of chocolate or biscuits. Reusable cutlery – Wooden or stainless steel works well. Napkins or kitchen roll – For inevitable spills. 6. Baby & Toddler Beach Essentials If you’ve got little ones, this section is a lifesaver. Baby sunscreen – Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and suitable for under 1 year. Sun tent – Keeps babies shaded and cool. Change of clothes – Several sets (because sand will get everywhere). Portable travel cot – If you’re planning a full-day trip and your baby naps. Baby carrier – For walking across sand without wrestling a pram. Snacks & milk – Age-appropriate and easy to serve at the beach. 7. Extras You’ll Be Glad You Packed These are the little things that make a huge difference. Plastic bags – For wet swimwear or rubbish. Ziplock bags – Keep phones and valuables safe from sand and water. Power bank – For topping up your phone’s battery. Light jumper or hoodie – Beaches can get chilly in the evening. Change of clothes for everyone – No one likes sitting in wet swimwear on the way home. Top Tips for a Stress-Free Family Beach Trip Packing is half the battle, and these tips will help you win the other half. Pack the night before – Avoid the last-minute rush. Keep a beach bag ready all summer – Store beach bag essentials like sunscreen, hats, and toys so you can grab and go. Use a checklist app – Stops you from forgetting anything. Wear swimsuits under clothes – Saves time when you arrive. Plan shade breaks – Especially for younger children who burn easily.
