10 Healthy Airplane Snacks for Kids

Posted on July 31, 2025July 31, 2025 By Becky

airplane snacks for kids

Flying with kids can be a magical adventure… or a real test of patience and snack-packing skills. If you’ve ever had to juggle a restless toddler at 30,000 feet, you’ll know that when packing your kids’ plane carry on, snacks are the real in-flight entertainment!

But here’s the tricky part: airplane food isn’t always the healthiest or most appetising, and those tiny packets of pretzels aren’t going to keep little tummies satisfied for long. The good news? With a little prep, you can pack nutritious, kid-approved airplane snacks that are easy to transport, won’t cause a sugar crash mid-flight, and can even help keep kids happy and calm during long travel days.

Whether you’re heading on a family holiday, or flying to visit family, here are 10 healthy airplane snacks for kids, each one tasty, mess-free and travel-friendly.

1. Homemade Energy Bites

Why they’re great for travel: Energy bites are small, satisfying and packed with protein and fibre, which is perfect for keeping kids fuller for longer.

What’s inside:

  • Rolled oats (great for slow-release energy)

  • Peanut or almond butter (healthy fats + protein)

  • Honey or maple syrup (natural sweetness)

  • Add-ins: mini chocolate chips, chia seeds, or raisins

Travel tip: Make them small so they’re perfect for little hands, and store them in a reusable snack box. These are also no-mess airplane snacks, so no crumbs going everywhere!

2. Apple Slices with Nut Butter Packs

Why they’re great for travel: Crunchy, sweet, and nutritious, apples are a winner for in-flight snacking. Pre-sliced apples pair perfectly with individual nut butter packs (look for single-serve pouches).

What’s inside:

  • Fresh apple slices (sprinkle with lemon juice to stop browning)

  • Almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter for nut-free flights

Travel tip: Check airline rules if you’re flying internationally, some countries have restrictions on fresh fruit. You should also be prepared to forgo the nut butter on your flight, should they announce on board that someone has a nut allergy. Just something to bear in mind.

3. Mini Wrap Roll-Ups

Why they’re great for travel: These are like little snack-sized sandwiches, but far less messy.

What’s inside:

  • Wholewheat tortilla

  • Cream cheese or hummus

  • Turkey, chicken, or cheese slices

  • Veggie extras: cucumber, grated carrot, spinach

Travel tip: Roll them up tight, slice into bite-sized pieces, and wrap in parchment for easy eating.

4. Cheese Cubes & Wholegrain Crackers

Why they’re great for travel: The protein from cheese keeps little bellies full, while wholegrain crackers add fibre and crunch.

What’s inside:

  • Mild cheddar, mozzarella, or Babybel cheese (still my favourite even as an adult!)

  • Wholegrain or seeded crackers (look for low-salt options for young kids)

Travel tip: Use a small bento or snackle box so the crackers don’t get squashed mid-flight.

5. Frozen Grapes or Blueberries

Why they’re great for travel: These double up as a cool treat and a healthy snack. Frozen fruit stays cold for hours, especially if you tuck it into an insulated bag.

What’s inside:

  • Fresh seedless grapes or blueberries (wash and freeze before travel)

Travel tip: Great for summer flights! Always supervise younger children with grapes (I still slice for my kids to avoid choking, even though they’re now older).

6. Veggie Sticks with Hummus

Why they’re great for travel: A crunchy, nutrient-packed snack with a creamy dip to make it extra tasty.

What’s inside:

  • Carrot sticks, cucumber batons, bell pepper slices

  • Hummus in a small leak-proof pot or single-serve tub

Travel tip: Keep veggies crisp by storing with a damp piece of kitchen towel inside your container.

7. Banana & Oat Mini Muffins

Why they’re great for travel: Soft, mess-free, and naturally sweetened, these are perfect for little ones (and grown-ups who want a quick bite).

What’s inside:

  • Mashed ripe bananas

  • Rolled oats

  • Wholemeal flour

  • Eggs (or flaxseed egg for vegan)

Travel tip: Bake in mini muffin tins for portion control and easy snacking.

8. Trail Mix (Kid-Friendly)

Why they’re great for travel: Customise your own to suit your child’s tastes, and avoid all the sugary extras found in shop-bought mixes.

What’s inside:

  • Unsalted nuts (or seeds for nut-free)

  • Dried fruit like apricots, cranberries, or raisins

  • A few dark chocolate chips for fun

Travel tip: Make small snack-sized portions to avoid overeating in one go.

9. Rice Cakes with Toppings

Why they’re great for travel: Light, versatile, and great for layering with different spreads.

What’s inside:

  • Plain or lightly salted rice cakes

  • Peanut butter, cream cheese, or mashed avocado

  • Optional topping: banana slices or berries

Travel tip: Pre-top them before you fly and store in a small airtight box so they don’t break.

10. Greek Yogurt Pouches

Why they’re great for travel: Protein-packed and creamy, yogurt pouches are perfect for a mid-flight snack.

What’s inside:

  • Greek yogurt in a squeezable pouch (look for no added sugar)

  • Flavours like strawberry, vanilla, or blueberry

Travel tip: Freeze the pouch before travel so it thaws during the flight and stays fresh.

Pro Snack-Packing Tips for Parents

  • Pack small portions – multiple mini snacks are better than one big one.

  • Use reusable silicone snack bags to save space and reduce waste.

  • Bring wipes and napkins – even the neatest eaters can get messy at altitude.

  • Check airline rules for bringing fresh produce or dairy products, especially for international travel.

FAQs: Healthy Airplane Snacks for Kids

Can I bring my own snacks on a plane for kids?

Yes! Most airlines allow you to bring your own snacks, as long as they meet security rules (no liquids over 100ml, although this advice is changing day-by-day, so be sure to check). This is especially important if your child has allergies or dietary restrictions.

What snacks are TSA-approved for kids?

Solid foods like fruit, crackers, cheese, and sandwiches are fine. Liquids, gels, and yogurts must be under 100ml unless they’re considered “medically necessary” for babies and toddlers (in which case you can declare them).

How do I keep snacks fresh on a long flight?

Use an insulated lunch bag with a small ice pack. Freeze items like grapes, yogurt pouches, or muffins the night before for longer freshness.

What are the best allergy-friendly airplane snacks for kids?

For nut-free options, go for:

  • Veggie sticks with hummus

  • Rice cakes with cream cheese

  • Banana oat muffins

  • Seed-based trail mix

How much food should I bring for my child on a plane?

Pack more than you think you’ll need! Flights can be delayed, and kids tend to snack more when bored. A good rule: one snack for every hour of travel.

What snacks should I avoid on planes?

Avoid overly messy foods (like yogurt cups without lids), strong-smelling snacks (fish-based foods), or anything too sugary that could cause a mid-flight meltdown.

Travelling with kids doesn’t have to mean relying on overpriced, unhealthy airport snacks. With a bit of prep, you can bring along healthy airplane snacks for kids that are tasty, mess-free, and nutritious. Plus, packing your own means you know exactly what’s in them and you can cater to picky eaters with ease.

Next time you’re boarding a flight, try a mix of these 10 ideas and watch your little ones stay happily fuelled until landing!
