What’s the Best Way to Not Feel Like a Tourist in London? Posted on May 11, 2025November 17, 2025 By Becky Honestly, who wouldn’t want to make the most out of London? There’s always something to see and do, even if you’ve been there more than a million times. Basically, London’s one of those places that’s always got something going on. But when you’re trying not to stick out like someone who just bought a souvenir hoodie from Camden (does anyone from the UK actually do that, though?), it helps to ditch the touristy checklist and do things a little differently. But really, there’s no shame in wanting to see the big stuff, but it’s way more fun when you don’t feel like you’re in a herd following a guide with a little flag. So if the plan is to explore the city and not feel like you’re on a school trip, here’s how to make it feel a bit more low-key and a lot more like you actually belong there. Stay somewhere that doesn’t feel like a hotel corridor Okay, it’s best to just go ahead and start off with this: your location matters. Booking a place in the middle of the West End might sound convenient, but it also means stepping out into a sea of tour groups and street performers in questionable outfits. Again, for a tourist, like someone who isn’t from the UK, that’ll be great. But for you and your family, well, you should go for a flat or a cosy spot in a proper neighborhood instead. Ideally, somewhere like Hackney, Angel, maybe even a leafy bit of south London like Dulwich or Herne Hill. The vibe’s totally different. You wake up to locals walking their dogs and people grabbing coffee before work. It’s just quiet, too. Eat somewhere with an actual vibe, not laminated menus Yep, food in London can be really hit or miss if you’re not careful. Chances are, you’re more than familiar with that, right? Yeah, sure, tourist traps are everywhere, and half the time the meals are just okay at best. Instead, go for places that feel like people actually want to hang out there. Besides, depending on the season and the weather, you might want to look into a good outdoor restaurant London style. You know, somewhere with ambiance, not just a few tables chucked on the pavement next to a traffic light (which is way too common in London). Just be on the lookout for courtyards, quiet patios, maybe even rooftop views (the prices for the food don’t need to be outrageous either). For example, Cataleya Lounge offers a seamless blend of luxury shisha, gourmet dining, and vibrant nightlife in North London. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just wondering what is shisha, our lounge is the place to discover its finest expression. Experience the energy of our iconic White Party events where every night becomes a celebration. Don’t try to do everything at once Obvious enough, right? Well, yeah, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of cramming everything into one weekend, every big sight, every top-rated spot, every trendy area someone on TikTok said was a must. But honestly? That’s how you end up tired, overwhelmed, and eating sad snacks on a bench in Leicester Square, wondering why it’s all so stressful. But really, you should instead just pick a couple of things each day and take your time with them. If something else catches your eye along the way, go for it. No, really, just do that. Seriously, that’s the beauty of a city like London, there’s always something interesting around the corner. You don’t need to chase it. It’ll find you. Walk more, take the bus, or even both The Tube’s fine, but you miss everything when you’re underground. But again, it’s fine. However, you should walk when you can. Not only will you spot way more cool stuff, but you’ll also feel way more connected to the city. There’s the bus too which is pretty cheap (not a tour bus, but an actual bus). It helps there’s bus lanes in most neighbourhoods too. See more London adventures here!
