How to Protect Your Car Windscreen from Chips

One of the things you probably don’t think about too much is your car’s windscreen. You won’t think about it because you’re just looking out of it to see where you’re going, but you suddenly notice when a tiny chip appears out of nowhere. One minute you’re driving down the highway, and the next you hear that dreaded crack from a flying pebble. 

Windscreen chips are a pain, and they might seem like a small nuisance, but when they’re left unchecked, they can turn into a much bigger, much more expensive problem. The good news though, is that there are simple ways that you can protect your car and avoid those annoying chips happening in the first place. Let’s take a look at how you can keep your windscreen in one piece.

Invest in windscreen protection.

Just like with paint, protection film can help prevent scratches and Dings on your windscreen. Windscreen protection film as that layer of defence against chips and cracks that you never knew you needed. It’s a clear and durable material. And no, the dealership is not trying to upsell you.

Check your following distances.

It’s a common cause of windscreen chips, but most people don’t think about correcting themselves and instead blame everybody else on the road. Loose gravel or debris that gets kicked up by the car in front of you can cause chips, and the closer you are, the more likely your windscreen is going to catch whatever comes flying. By keeping a safe distance, especially when driving behind trucks or construction vehicles, you’ll be able to avoid the debris.

Try not to drive on the gravel roads.

Sometimes gravel roads are unavoidable, but if you do have a choice between a paved street and a rocky shortcut, always go for the paved street. Gravel roads are full of loose stones, and the faster you go, the more likely you’re going to fling something right at your own windscreen. If you do have to go down that gravel path, slow down and take it easy. With less speed comes less impact.

Don’t ignore the small chips.

If you’ve already got a chip, then the best thing you can do is fix it sooner than later. Chips may not seem like a huge deal, but the changes in temperature or pressure can turn that tiny little crack into a full blown issue. You don’t want to have to replace the entire windscreen when most chips can be repaired easily and affordably.

Be mindful of extreme temperatures.

Going from the blazing sun to icy air conditioning in seconds sounds great for your comfort, but not for your windscreen. Sudden temperature changes can really make a big difference and can stress the glass, which makes it more vulnerable to chips and cracks. Try to not to warm or cool your car too quickly. Taking your time when it comes to temperatures will keep your windscreen living for longer without you having to spend out too much cash.
