Setting Your Kids Up for a Great Education

Posted on April 14, 2025March 13, 2026 By Becky

We all want ur kids to do their best and achieve their full potential, especially when it comes to education, but how exactly can we achieve that? What can we do to set them up for success right from the off? Today, families have access to flexible learning solutions that support students beyond the traditional classroom. Proximity Learning offers structured academic guidance that helps children stay engaged while strengthening their understanding of core subjects.

  1. Start Early

Okay, so you don’t need to have your toddler reciting the works of Shakespeare or anything ridiculous like that, but when it comes to education, the younger you get started, the better it will be for your kids. So, start them young focusing on educational play like board games, card games and maybe even the odd app, and pique their curiosity and excitement early on.

  1. Encourage Self-Directed Learning

One of the best gifts you can give your child is the ability to learn independently. Introduce them to interesting facts, show them how to look things up (goodbye, endless “Why is the sky blue?” queries), and let them explore topics that genuinely fascinate them. If your child is crazy about dinosaurs, lean into that! Let them devour dinosaur books, watch documentaries, and even attempt to draw T-Rex battles on the living room wall—well, maybe just on paper, unless you’re very adventurous.

  1. Money Matters

Education doesn’t come cheap—especially if your child decides they desperately need that fancy new laptop for school (the one with 68 different features you can’t even pronounce). To avoid future panic, consider starting a savings plan early. Different countries have different perks—Canada, for instance, offers Registered Education Savings Plans with specific RESP contributions limits, ensuring you don’t overdo it. Even if you’re not in a position to stash away huge sums, building the habit of saving early can make a world of difference by the time your mini-me hits university age.

  1. Encourage a Growth Mindset

We’ve all seen it: a child who bursts into tears the moment they stumble on a tough question, convinced they’re rubbish at maths or reading. Teach them that mistakes are stepping stones, not disasters. For some children, a little extra guidance through online tutoring can make challenges feel less overwhelming. Show them the value of trying, failing, and trying again. Praise their efforts rather than their innate intelligence, and watch them tackle challenges with the grit of a determined explorer on a quest for buried treasure. Asking the right questions at school parents’ evenings can also help you gain an idea and understanding as to how your child is doing at school, and so you can help them grow going forward.

  1. Seek Out Real-World Experiences

Classrooms aren’t the only place your children can learn. Museums, local art galleries, science festivals, and even just a random walk in the woods can do wonders. Hands-on experiences spark creativity and help kids connect their lessons to the wider world. Besides, these trips often lead to hilarious memories—like the time your child insisted on giving an in-depth lecture about sloths to random passersby.

  1. Embrace the Unexpected

Finally, remember that each child is different. The path to education excellence might involve dance classes instead of football, or a passion for cooking over coding. Go with the flow. Support them wholeheartedly, even if they gravitate towards something you’ve never considered. A child who feels free to pursue their passions will naturally flourish—and, who knows, might even teach you a thing or two along the way.

Education, education, education, right?
