The Hidden Road Risk You Might Be Ignoring Posted on September 16, 2025 By Becky Right, let’s have a proper chat about something that’s been on my mind lately – and no, it’s not wondering why Arlo has left his school shoes in the garden again (though that is a mystery for another day!). National Eye Health Week runs from 22 to 28 September 2025, and honestly, it’s got me thinking about how much we all take our eyesight for granted. I mean, we’re constantly banging on about speed limits and whether the kids have had too much screen time, but when did you last think about whether you can actually see properly when you’re behind the wheel? Here’s something that’ll make you pause mid-school run coffee: apparently over two million people in the UK are driving around with vision that’s below the legal standard. Two million! That’s absolutely bonkers when you think about it. And it’s not just statistics either – there have been some really tragic cases recently where fatal accidents happened because drivers simply couldn’t see properly. A senior coroner even called our current system “ineffective” – and when you look at what we’re still relying on, you can see why. The Current Rules (Spoiler: They’re a Bit Rubbish) So here’s what the law says: in good daylight, you need to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away, and meet something called a minimum visual acuity of 0.5 with both eyes. Whether you’re trying to spot a hazard, identify another car in traffic, or even just admiring those fancy personalised number plates (guilty!), being able to see them clearly isn’t optional – it’s literally life and death stuff. But here’s the thing – critics reckon that relying on self-declaration and a quick kerbside reading test is pretty useless when you consider all the tech we have available now. And honestly? They’ve got a point. When Your Eyes Start Playing Tricks The really scary bit is that declining vision isn’t something you necessarily notice straight away. It’s sneaky like that – a bit like how you don’t realise your kids have grown until you see them next to their friends from last year! Adam’s been complaining about headlights lately, and it turns out that’s actually a thing. Astigmatism can make headlights and streetlamps look all streaky and star-like. Signs become harder to read when it’s raining (and let’s face it, in South East London that’s most of the time). Cataracts add halos and glare that make night driving feel like you’re staring into a floodlight. And glaucoma? That quietly trims away your side vision, so a cyclist or someone crossing the road can literally disappear into your blind spot. These aren’t rare conditions we’re talking about – they’re everyday issues that get properly dangerous once the sun goes down. The Great Headlight Debate Speaking of headlights, is it just me or are car headlights getting ridiculously bright these days? Turns out I’m not going mad – surveys show that the vast majority of drivers are struggling with glare from other cars. One RAC study found that over four in five people reckon the problem’s getting worse, and even the government’s looking into it now. The AA’s members are pointing fingers at certain LED setups, and honestly, whether it’s the brightness, the angle, or just the contrast with our generally rubbish British street lighting, the end result is the same: your eyes are working overtime, and any vision problems you’ve got are getting amplified. What’s Being Done About It? The good news is that people in charge seem to be actually listening for once! There’s talk of mandatory eye tests for older drivers, and there’s loads of debate about it. The Association of Optometrists and the College of Optometrists want to go further – they’re pushing for proper sight tests when you first get your licence, vision checks every ten years when you renew, and more frequent checks (every three years) for the over-70s. Look, I get that some people might worry about fairness and where you draw the line, but honestly? If it means fewer accidents and everyone getting home safely to their families, I’m all for it. What You Can Do Right Now While we’re all waiting for the powers-that-be to sort their act out, there’s plenty you can do yourself. When did you last have an eye test? If you’re scratching your head trying to remember, that’s probably your answer right there. Every two years is the general rule, but sooner if something feels off. If you’re finding night driving a bit hazy, or if oncoming headlights are leaving you squinting and swearing under your breath, don’t just grin and bear it – book that appointment! And here are some practical bits while you’re at it: keep your windscreen and headlights clean (I know, revolutionary stuff), think about anti-reflection coating if you wear glasses, and be honest with yourself about those long night drives until you’ve got your vision sorted. Oh, and those yellow-tinted “night driving” glasses you see advertised online? Give them a miss. They can actually reduce the light reaching your eyes, which is the last thing you need when you’re trying to see in the dark. The Bottom Line National Eye Health Week is the perfect excuse to make eye health checks as routine as checking your tyre pressure or filling up the windscreen washer (though let’s be honest, I’m terrible at remembering both of those too!). Book that eye test, and nag your mates and family to do the same. It’s one of those small habits that could genuinely make a massive difference. At the end of the day, it’s pretty simple really. Better vision means better judgment, faster reactions, and fewer horrible surprises on the road. We’re always going on about making our roads safer – well, this is one area where the solution is refreshingly straightforward. See better, drive better, and help everyone get home in one piece. Because whether you’re doing the school run, heading out for date night with your other half, or just popping to the shops, we all deserve to get there safely. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and solve the mystery of those garden shoes… See more of my automotive posts here BeckyMeet the award-nominated UK lifestyle blogger behind Spirited Puddle Jumper – a mum of three living in South East London!
