Ways to be helpful when teaching your teen how to drive Posted on September 17, 2024November 12, 2024 By Becky Teaching your teenager how to drive is a significant milestone for parents. It’s a moment filled with excitement and, understandably, some apprehension. Data from the year ending March 2024 showed the pass rate for practical tests was less than 50%, which makes additional experience vital to improve their chances of acquiring their license. With the average cost of lessons being almost £1,700 to pass, extra support can help cut expenses as they may need fewer sessions with professionals. This is especially important given the ongoing economic uncertainty. If you do decide to provide additional training for your child, you must understand how to be truly helpful. Start with the basics Teach them about the basic controls, such as steering, braking and using the mirrors. A great way to do this is by starting in a quiet, controlled environment like an empty car park, where they can get comfortable with the vehicle without traffic. Gradually introduce them to quieter residential roads to build their confidence in a stress-free setting before moving on to more advanced skills. Cover the practicalities Before anyone gets behind the wheel, ensure they’re legally prepared. This includes obtaining a provisional licence and securing insurance for young drivers. There are some ways to cut down the cost of your cover if you’re worried about the quote. Learning in a cheap, less powerful car, adding experienced motorists to the policy and opting for a black box can all help. Stay calm and be patient Staying calm, offering constructive feedback and using positive reinforcement will make the process smoother for both of you. Teenagers might take longer to grasp certain manoeuvres, so patience is critical. Try to remember that everyone learns at their own pace, and frustration can hinder their development. By creating a supportive learning environment, you can foster a sense of confidence and safety. Plan practice sessions with a focus on key skills Start with foundational skills like parking and handling junctions, then introduce more challenging scenarios such as navigating roundabouts or dual carriageways. Make sure each session has a specific focus and let them know what it’ll be in advance, so they can mentally prepare. Review what they’ve learned and identify areas for improvement afterwards to ensure continuous progression. Emphasise the importance of road safety Educating your teen about the importance of maintaining a safe speed, keeping a proper distance from other vehicles and being mindful of pedestrians are lessons that can stick with them for life. In case of an accident, understanding the legal implications and seeking assistance from a lawyer can provide valuable guidance in navigating any challenges, ensuring your teen is properly informed and protected. Not only does safe driving reduce the risk of accidents, but it can also positively affect long-term insurance prices by reducing premiums as they gain more experience. Encouraging them to develop these habits from the outset can pay off in more ways than one. See some of my parenting posts here and my automotive posts here!
