5 Water Sports To Boost Your Wellbeing

Posted on March 2, 2020July 15, 2026 By Becky

paddle boarding

Looking for a new sports hobby to get fit this year? Tired of your gym sessions and wanting to start something new? Soon the spring time will arrive, which means sunnier skies and the potential for watersports. Hobbies that involve water are commonly associated with tranquillity and relaxation, yet there are also some which are pretty fast-paced, providing you with an excellent work-out. For a few watersports options to boost your wellbeing, consider these five fun options.

If you want to balance water sports along with land-based training, then incorporating a boxing routine into the dynamic can dramatically improve your endurance and strength. Quality gear such as professional Fairtex store-boxing gloves will ensure that you get the proper support while you build technique and power. Mixing cardio heavy water sports with combat training creates a fitness approach that is well rounded.

SUP

SUP stands for ‘stand up paddleboarding’, it’s a little bit like surfing, apart from the aim is to propel yourself along the surface of the water using a paddle. Generally, stand-up paddleboarding is practised on calmer waters, as opposed to while riding big waves. With SUP, you’ll get a full-body workout, and you’ll perfect your balance, posture and core strength. There’s also SUP Yoga, which involves practising all your favourite yoga poses on a paddleboard!

Kayaking

Kayaking consists of using a double-bladed paddle to manoeuvre a small boat through the water. You’ll sit with your legs underneath a closed- boat deck, with your upper body free above the water. Depending on your level or desired intensity, kayaking experiences are varied. Some prefer recreational kayaking, travelling around calm waters where there’s time to stop and admire the scenery. For those who wish to take things up a notch, sports-based kayaking is a little more high-tempo. Either way, you’ll want some great watersports based clothing. For some great quality and nice prices, check out Pinnell & Bax.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing involves standing on a board attached to a kite; the kite uses the power of the wind to propel you across and over the waters. You don’t actually need waves to kitesurf, just the wind and the ability to balance on your board. Kitesurfing is a great way to tone the body and build core strength. In a short amount of time, you’ll be sure to strengthen your abdominal muscles. What’s more, kitesurfing uses both resistance and aerobics exercises which can help to improve your heart health.

Bodyboarding

Bodyboarding is similar to surfing, apart from you generally ride laying down, or sometimes in a half-standing pose. Besides being super fun, there are plenty of benefits. With the help of bodyboarding, you’ll strengthen your arms and legs plus improve your coordination and balance skills. Though it’s commonly seen as an ‘easier version of surfing’ bodyboarding is not as simple as it looks, and you’ll definitely get yourself a real workout!

Sailing

Sailing is a great hobby, with plenty of skills to gain. There is lots to learn when it comes to operating a sailboat, so this one takes a little patience. It can be nice to join a sailing club, for the social aspect and for trading tips. Sailing provides a nice workout, plus spending time out on the water promotes a sense of relaxation.

No matter which sport you try, be sure to pay attention to the important health and safety practices before you get stuck in.
