7 Things To Do During Passive Time When Making Bread

Posted on February 3, 2026 By Becky

Making your own bread can be a rewarding and cost-effective alternative to buying readymade loaves from the supermarket. The bread itself can be far tastier and better for you, too, as you control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives. It does, however, require quite a lot of time and patience. From mixing and kneading to proofing and baking, the entire process can take around 3 to 4 hours. That said, within that timeframe, there is only about 25 minutes of hands-on effort.

Whilst the bread is resting, rising (proofing), and baking, you are free to do what you like, as long as you keep an eye on the clock. Instead of feeling tied to the kitchen, these passive periods can be used productively or simply enjoyed as moments of rest. That’s why we’ve put together a list of ideas to help you make the most of your time while your dough quietly transforms into a delicious loaf.

1. Catch Up on Housework

Bread-making creates natural pockets of time that are ideal for small household tasks. Rather than tackling big cleaning jobs, focus on quick wins that can be done in short bursts. You might wipe down kitchen counters, sweep the floor, water plants, or sort out clutter in one room.

Doing housework while bread rises can also make your baking day feel more efficient overall. By the time the loaf comes out of the oven, not only do you have fresh bread cooling on the counter, but your home feels cleaner and more organised, too.

2. Play Mobile Games on Your Phone

If you’re in the mood to relax rather than be productive, playing mobile games is an easy and low-commitment option. Puzzles, word challenges and online slots can be played during these periods of downtime.

Mobile games are especially useful during shorter proofing stages, as they keep you entertained without fully distracting you from the baking process. Just remember to set timers so you don’t accidentally let your dough overproof while chasing a high score.

3. Do a Body Strength Workout

Waiting for the dough to rise is a great excuse to get moving. A short bodyweight workout can fit perfectly into a 15-20 minute window and requires no equipment at all. Exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, or sit-ups can easily be done at home.

Not only does this help you stay active, but it also prevents you from sitting around feeling impatient. Light exercise can boost your energy levels and mood, making the waiting time feel purposeful rather than wasted.

4. Read

There’s something especially comforting about reading while bread bakes in the background. Whether you choose a novel, a cookbook, or a magazine, reading allows you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

This is also a great chance to catch up on books you’ve been meaning to read but never seem to have time for. Pair it with a cup of tea or coffee, and the process of bread-making becomes part of a relaxing ritual rather than just another task.

5. Meditate

Bread-making naturally encourages patience, which makes it a perfect opportunity to practice mindfulness or meditation. You can use the quiet time to focus on your breathing, listen to a guided meditation, or simply sit still and observe your thoughts.

Even five to ten minutes of meditation can help reduce stress and create a sense of calm. When combined with the comforting smells and warmth of baking bread, it can turn your kitchen into a surprisingly peaceful space.

6. Watch a Film or Series

Longer proofing times or baking stages are ideal for watching a film or an episode of your favourite series. This works particularly well if you’re baking in the evening or on a relaxed weekend afternoon.

Make sure to keep your phone or kitchen timer nearby so you don’t get too absorbed and forget about the bread. Watching something familiar or light-hearted can be especially enjoyable while you wait for the oven timer to go off.

7. Learn More About Baking

Finally, you can use this time to improve your baking skills. Read articles, watch tutorials, or browse recipes to learn more about different types of bread, flours, and techniques.

Understanding concepts like hydration, fermentation, and shaping can help you improve future loaves and experiment with new styles. Over time, these small learning moments can turn bread-making from a simple hobby into a real skill.

Final Thoughts

Bread-making doesn’t have to feel like hours of waiting around. With a little planning, the passive time can be productive, relaxing, or educational. By the time your loaf is ready, you’ll have done far more than just bake bread, you’ll have made the most of your time too.
