4 Coastal Towns to Visit in the UK

Getting the most from a visit to the UK tends to mean spending a little bit of time by the coast. After all, this is an island nation, and much of its history is tied closely to the sea. What’s more, certain seaside towns have a great deal to offer when it comes to traditional beach-holiday charm.

St Ives

This Cornish town stands apart thanks to a collection of six sandy beaches. It’s also a famous haunt of artists, which is in strong evidence in the local gallery. Take a look across the sea, and you’ll find it easy to be inspired – especially if you’re walking the local South West Coast Path, or sitting in one of several great local fish restaurants.

Whitby

Another town with a great deal of history and cultural heft behind it, Whitby was memorably used by Bram Stoker in his famous vampire novel, as the point of arrival for Count Dracula. There’s an abbey sitting beside the sea, but you’ll need to climb up 199 steps to get to the top. If you’re planning a longer exploration of the surrounding moorland, then a stay in this particular town might be considered more than worthwhile.

Llandudno

This little town sits between the Irish Sea and the mountainous interior of North Wales. The more famous sections were constructed during the Victorian era, and they retain a character that evokes the period. While you’re in town, you might ride the tramway, visit the local Conwy Castle, or simply stroll along the promenade.

North Berwick

This little town sits just beyond Edinburgh. It provides excellent views of the surrounding Firth of Forth, and the famous Bass Rock. The vibe in town is a great deal more relaxed than it is in the major cities of Scotland, and there’s a great emphasis on the countryside and the local wildlife. During your visit, you’ll want to make time for the Seabird Centre, and for a walk along the coast. If you’re staying in the capital, then taking the time to visit this part of the country is more than worthwhile.
