Your Car Has Broken Down – What Do You Need To Do? Posted on March 20, 2026 By Becky Okay, so your car has broken down. That’s not convenient for you at all, and chances are that you’re already starting to get that feeling that things are going to get worse. The best thing that you can do in situations like these is separate your feelings from the facts, and then you can move forward. Feel your feelings later when you’re not in the middle of the situation, because they aren’t going to help you right now. In this article, we’re going to be going through some of the different steps that you need to take if your car has broken down, and why they are the right ones to take. If you would like to find out more, feel free to continue reading. First Off – Don’t Panic The first thing that we’re going to say is that you need to not panic. We know that this isn’t as easy as it sounds when you’re stuck somewhere, potentially on the street with other cars coming past and you’re just stuck. But, you need to make sure that you are staying calm, because if you work yourself up into a panic, then things are only going to get worse, and get harder. So, you need to sit down and calm down before you do anything else. You’re never going to be able to come up with a logical solution if your brain is firing panic signals all over the place. Second – Are You Safe? The next thing that we want you to ask yourself is are you safe? This is the most important thing that you can do, because you need to ensure your personal safety. The car is okay, but are you? If you’re in the middle of the street, you need to move as you can’t stay there. If you can’t get the car to move, don’t keep trying, just leave it where it is and get off of the street yourself. Once you’re safe, then you can start thinking about solutions to the issue, and what you’re going to do next. Third – Get Help So, the last step is going to be to get some help. Make some calls to mechanics in your area and see who is available to come and help you. If you have coverage for this, call them and get them to come and get you as soon as they can. Depending on the issue, you might need a general mechanic, you might need an auto electrician, so you’re just going to need to have the issue assessed and then wait to see. Get it fixed and then get back on the road. We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you need to do if your car breaks down. We know that it’s a hard situation, but thinking about it calmly is the best solution even though we know that it probably feels impossible at the time. It’ll be okay, though. More Tips for Handling a Car Breakdown Turn On Your Hazard Lights Immediately As soon as you realise something is wrong, switch on your hazard lights. This alerts other drivers that you’re having trouble and helps reduce the risk of an accident, especially in low visibility or busy traffic. Use a Warning Triangle (If Safe to Do So) If you have one in your car and it’s safe to exit the vehicle, place a warning triangle a short distance behind your car. This gives approaching drivers extra time to react. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Car It’s always a good idea to be prepared. Items like a torch, phone charger, blanket, water, and basic first aid kit can make a big difference if you’re stuck waiting for help. Stay With Your Vehicle (If Safe) In most situations, it’s safer to stay inside your car with your seatbelt on, especially if you’re on a busy road. Only leave the vehicle if it’s unsafe to remain inside. Know Your Breakdown Cover Details If you have roadside assistance, make sure you know who to call and what your policy includes. Saving the contact number in your phone can save valuable time in an emergency. Take Note of Your Location Try to identify where you are—look for road signs, landmarks, or use your phone’s GPS. This will make it much easier for recovery services to find you quickly.
