Will Vinegar Kills Ants, and Does Vinegar Keep Ants Away?

Posted on June 22, 2025June 23, 2025 By Becky

When ants invade your home, it can be an annoying experience. Ants are capable of causing serious damage and Ants Control in Sydney can be difficult, especially due to their numbers. Ants cannot stand powerful smells such as garlic, essential oils, and vinegar. So does vinegar kill ants? Vinegar, readily available in homes, can be an effective treatment for ants. This guide answers the question of will vinegar kills ants, and how can vinegar keep ants away?

Does Vinegar Kill Ants?

Does vinegar kill ants? Vinegar has an impact on ant behaviour. Whenever ants walk around, they leave a trail of chemical signals, which are used as communication channels. These channels are required for ants to coordinate with each other. Vinegar works by blocking these channels with its powerful smell. The ants fail to pick up the trails and panic.

While vinegar disrupts the ant’s ability to navigate, it does not kill them directly. Instead, it forces them to abandon the treated area in search of new food sources. This makes it a humane and eco-friendly way to repel ants without the use of harmful pesticides.

How Long Can Vinegar Be Effective?

While the smell of vinegar can be overwhelming for humans at first instance, its effect lingers on ants even after it has dried up. If you want to remove ants from an area, it is recommended to treat it thrice a week. Still, it is important to realise that this is not a permanent solution for removing an ant infestation.

The effectiveness of vinegar also depends on the type of surface it is applied to. Porous materials, such as wood and fabric, may absorb the vinegar, allowing its scent to last longer. However, on non-porous surfaces like tiles and countertops, the smell may dissipate more quickly, requiring more frequent applications.

How to Use Vinegar for Removing Ants?

There are different ways to use vinegar to remove ants. The simplest method is as follows:

  • Mix white vinegar in water in a misting bottle in a 1:1 ratio
  • Spread this solution on the areas infested with ants

You can increase the effect of vinegar for removing ants by just spreading white vinegar on the affected areas without mixing it with water. This can produce a stronger smell, thus removing the ants faster.

If you are facing a severe ant infestation in your home, you may need to use apple cider vinegar in place of white vinegar. Mix the apple cider vinegar with water and spray it over the affected areas. You should spray the mixture over both the hiding places and the entry points. This usually includes window sills, drainage areas, and kitchen cabinets.

For enhanced effectiveness, consider combining vinegar with other natural deterrents like citrus peels, cinnamon, or essential oils such as peppermint and tea tree oil. These ingredients not only repel ants but also leave a lovely smell within your home.

Can Vinegar Kill Ants?

People choose vinegar to get rid of ants. It is important to realise that this item doesn’t kill ants. When you use vinegar in and around your home, you will not have to feel bad that you will be hurting the ants. As mentioned above, you will be just repelling ants and causing disorientation. These pests will thus be forced to leave the infested areas. Besides, vinegar is safe to use in homes around children and pets.

While vinegar is a great natural remedy for repelling ants, it is not a long-term solution. For persistent infestations, it is advisable to combine vinegar treatments with other ant control methods, such as sealing entry points, keeping food storage areas clean, and using ant baits or traps. If the infestation becomes unmanageable, professional pest control services may be necessary to fully eliminate the problem.

What About Borax for Ants?

While vinegar can repel ants temporarily by disrupting their scent trails, it doesn’t kill the colony. If you’re looking for a more effective long-term solution, borax ant killer is a popular home remedy worth considering.

Borax (sodium borate) is a naturally occurring mineral that’s toxic to ants. When borax ant killer is mixed with a sweet or protein-based bait, it attracts worker ants, who carry the mixture back to their nest. Over time, the borax interferes with the ants’ digestive systems and kills the colony from within—including the queen.

Easy Homemade Borax Ant Killer Recipe:

  • Ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup sugar

    • 1 1/2 tablespoons borax

    • 1 1/2 cups warm water

  • Method: Stir the sugar and borax into the warm water until fully dissolved. Soak cotton balls in the mixture and place them in shallow containers near ant trails or entry points.

If ants in your home are more attracted to protein than sugar, you can swap the sugar solution for a mix of peanut butter and borax instead.

A Note on Safety:

Always place borax ant killer baits out of reach of children and pets. Although borax is low in toxicity to humans, it can still cause irritation if ingested or handled improperly. Label any homemade bait containers clearly, and clean up spills immediately.

Using borax alongside vinegar can give you both immediate disruption (from the vinegar) and a long-term solution (from the borax).
