Why Are Parents Giving Up on Their Own Hobbies?

Posted on October 26, 2026 By Becky

Parents often place their own interests at the bottom of a list filled with school runs, work deadlines and household jobs. Hobbies that once brought energy and friendship gradually disappear from the diary, sometimes without a conscious decision. Yet personal time supports wellbeing and gives adults an identity beyond their caring responsibilities. Reclaiming it doesn’t require hours every day. A regular game, class or creative project can be enough to make the week feel more balanced.

The Constant Struggle for Personal Time

Family life contains plenty of hidden time demands. A one-hour children’s activity may involve packing bags, travelling, waiting and organising food afterwards. One Project Play survey found that parents can spend more than three hours each day that their child participates in sport. That leaves little space for an adult’s own interests.

Waiting for a completely free afternoon rarely works. Instead, identify a repeatable 45-minute slot and protect it in the family calendar. Sharing lifts with another parent or alternating bedtime duties can create usable time without adding pressure elsewhere. If even that feels ambitious, choose an activity that starts close to home and needs minimal preparation.

Rediscovering Social Court Games

Court games suit busy parents because sessions have clear start and finish times. You can book a court for an hour, enjoy some friendly competition and return home without losing the whole evening. Tennis also works with one companion, so organising a game can be simpler than gathering a large group.

Begin by contacting someone you already know and suggesting a specific time. “Tuesday at 7 pm for one hour” is far easier to answer than a vague plan to meet someday. Check your kit before that first session too. If your current racket feels uncomfortable or no longer suits your playing style, comparing adult tennis rackets can help you find an option that feels comfortable and manageable. Local leisure centres may also offer pay-as-you-go courts, social sessions and beginner coaching.

Choosing Equipment for a Comfortable Return

Equipment shouldn’t create an unnecessary barrier to returning. Look over the frame, grip and strings before playing, especially if your racket has spent several years in a loft or garage. A worn grip can feel slippery, while damaged strings may affect control. A fresh grip or restring could be enough, although persistent discomfort may signal that the racket’s weight or grip size doesn’t suit you.

Avoid choosing solely by appearance or professional endorsements. Recreational players often benefit from a manageable weight, a comfortable grip and a forgiving head size. If possible, ask a coach or experienced retailer for guidance and try a racket before committing. The aim is to finish a relaxed session feeling pleasantly active, not nursing a sore wrist or shoulder.

Establish Guilt-Free Weekly Routines

Treat hobby time as a normal part of family life, not a reward that appears only after every job is finished. Put it in the shared diary for four weeks and review how the arrangement works. Predictable routines help partners plan fairly and show children that adults need interests too.

Parents can also make leisure more visible at home. Talk about an enjoyable rally, display a craft project or share a new skill you’ve learnt. Young people sometimes face their own barriers to hobbies, so seeing a parent practise imperfectly can reduce the pressure to be instantly good at something.

On weeks when leaving home is difficult, keep a flexible backup. These games for busy parents to play right now offer an easy way to preserve some playful time without arranging travel or childcare.

Your hobby deserves a named place in the diary, even if that place is one hour every Tuesday. Book the first session with a friend, agree who is covering home duties and allow yourself to enjoy it without mentally compiling the next day’s task list.
