Why autumn is a great time of year to improve your outdoor space

Posted on September 13, 2024 By Becky

As the nights start to draw in and the air begins to feel fresher, autumn can be a great season for making changes to your garden so that you’re in poll position to enjoy it once the weather gets warmer again next year.

So, this autumn, consider mulching your borders, planting spring bulbs and preparing new ground in which to grow things. Try not to leave beds empty with exposed soil over winter, as this isn’t great for the health of your soil.

There are clearly more leaves in the garden than usual at the moment, so help to keep the grass in good condition with frequent clearing. You could use a battery-powered leaf blower, or just a good old-fashioned rake, and then what you gather up could make leaf mould to feed plants next year. Pile them in wire cages, which allows them to break down.

Alternatively, if space is tight, use heavy-duty sacks, tied at the top. Have holes close to the bottom of each bag so that air can circulate.

At the same time, you may also want to redesign sections of your garden and planting new trees and shrubs. A sensory garden, in which you immerse yourself in nature with all your senses, could be one idea. Create it now and it will be ready to stimulate your senses during future winters.

Adding some luxury to your outdoor space

With a little careful planning, attention to detail plus the right design choices, you can create an upscale al fresco sanctuary. Consider incorporating a dining or lounge area, or perhaps a fire pit, where you can entertain or just relax in style.

With a well-appointed open-air living space, you’ll enjoy your garden more, and increase its usability, while adding a dash of sophistication and luxury, and truly reflecting your own style and taste.

You’ll need some stylish outdoor furniture, including some decent seating, to make this space inviting. Teak garden benches, for example, offer the ultimate in durability, comfort and elegance. Equally, these gorgeous pieces will be able to withstand the rigours of the winters ahead while retaining their beauty and integrity.

So a bench in this stunning wood will be luxurious yet low-maintenance – in fact, almost no upkeep will be needed. Equally, you’ll be able to choose anything from a traditional look to something with a more contemporary appeal, depending on the style you have gone for in your garden.

Go for the finest A-grade heartwood timber for your bench. And, finally, remember that teak can be a sustainable option if you buy products from certified plantations.

Practical visual appeal with Gabion Rock

This stone is the perfect material when filling gabion rock baskets – simple wire-mesh cages which are multi-purpose. They can be used, for example, for building retaining walls, and also help prevent erosion, or provide a landscape element. They’re frequently used in areas with steep inclines.

Finally, you can fill them with recycled material and they’re highly strong and stable. The soil in the spaces between the filling material can allow vegetation to grow, over time.

However you use this idea, it can help to transform your garden or other outdoor space.
