Which Casino Games Offer the Most Interesting Strategies?

Posted on September 19, 2024 By Becky

Whether you’re laying down the chips online, or heading to your local casino dressed up to the nines, the chances are you won’t get far without a basic bit of strategy. Sure, some casino games are much more luck based – you won’t find too many people touting slot strategies for example, other than looking for a strong RTP and a good site to play on.

However, others have a decent helping of strategy! We’re going to look at some of the strategies that are, well, interesting. A bunch of them are successful, some are simply good for keeping you focused, either way, they’re all pretty unique.

Blackjack – The Big One

With the lowest house edge in the casino, blackjack tends to be the choice for the biggest enthusiasts. While there’s a heavy dose of strategy involved, there’s no saying what card is going to come up next in the deal – or is there? Let’s take a look at some of the more unconventional approaches to blackjack strategy, including a mackerel of card counting!

The Hi-Lo Card Counting System

Card counting has a somewhat legendary status in blackjack circles, think Rainman, or 21, but – not all systems are created equal. As well as that, not all of us are savants at the same level Raymond is in Rainman! So, we’re going to have a look at the Hi-Lo system. It’s a straightforward approach that allows you to segment the cards into High and Low.

Cards from two up to six are assigned a value of +1, cards from seven to nine get a value of zero, and the remainder – 10, J, Q, K, and A are all -1. Got it? As the cards get dealt, it’s your job to keep count, adding and subtracting one as necessary. When the count is high this means there are more high cards left in the deck – because you’ve not been subtracting much. So, this is a fun time to up your bet. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme! But it is a clever way of making sure you’re keeping an eye on things, concentrating, and injecting a little strategy, which are – all – essential parts of a successful blackjack play.

The Wonging Strategy

Named after renowned blackjack expert Stanford Wong, this strategy involves lurking (basically) at the blackjack table without placing bets, observing until the deck becomes favourable. Once the deck contains a higher proportion of high cards (you can use the hi-lo strategy above to keep an eye on that!) you join the game and begin betting. The quirky part? Some casinos actively watch for players who ‘Wong’ and may ask them to leave. It’s not illegal, but it does require a lot of patience and careful observation. Plus, it’s no good if you’re playing online – as you usually can’t watch other people’s games.

Roulette – Is It Patterns or Pure Chance?

Roulette is often seen as the ultimate game of chance, and to be honest with you, it’s for a good reason! But, even here, some players seek to game the system with unusual strategies. Let’s take a look at one and work out what it’s all about.

The Martingale System

The Martingale strategy is not for the faint-hearted, as it can drain your bankroll quickly if you hit a losing streak. The first thing to understand about it is that it doesn’t actually involve thinking about roulette odds at all, instead it works on a simple maths-first approach. Quite simply, after every loss – double your bet, with the idea being that eventually, you’ll win and recover all your previous losses in one shot.

It’s a bold, all-or-nothing approach that’s as much about nerves as it is about numbers. This strategy is mostly used on even-money bets, such as red or black, but the biggest risk is encountering a table limit before you can recover from your losses.

Craps – Rolling with the Punches

Craps might seem chaotic with its fast pace and multitude of betting options, but it hides some interesting strategic approaches. Beyond the basic pass and don’t pass bets, here are two different strategies that can keep things interesting.

The 3-Point Molly Strategy

This system involves making a pass line bet, then placing two come bets after the point has been established. The goal is to have three active numbers in play, giving you multiple chances to win on each roll. It’s a progressive strategy that adds layers of excitement as you cover different numbers. While this approach (like pretty much all casino strategy) doesn’t – guarantee – you’ll make money – after all, the house always wins, it aims to minimise losses over time and keep the game moving at a fast pace.

The Iron Cross Strategy

Like a high-action game? Well, the Iron Cross strategy covers as many numbers as possible. You place a field bet along with place bets on the 5, 6, and 8. If any of these numbers hit, you win. The catch? You lose if a 7 comes up, and with craps being a game of constant tension between winning and rolling a 7, this strategy can feel like walking a tightrope. It’s designed to keep you in action for longer, but that lingering threat of hitting a 7 means it’s a risky ride.
