What’s Holding You Back From Your Fitness Goals Outside Of Workouts?

Posted on May 29, 2025January 13, 2026 By Becky

When embarking on a fitness journey, finding workout routines that align with your goals should be a priority. Even if you spend an hour in the gym every single day, this is less than 5% of your life. To truly maximise success, you must also consider your lifestyle as a whole.

The harsh reality is that simple issues outside of exercise could be costing you dearly. Here are four of the most commonly overlooked items that you must pay attention to. When you do, the road to fitness becomes a whole lot smoother.

Mental Health Issues

Links between physical and mental health have been statistically shown time and time again. For starters, anxiety struggles could impact you on the playing field or in the gym. It could see you avoid certain exercises or perform below your full potential. Whether through reduced outputs or skipped sessions, this can stand in the way of significant progress.

Poor mental health can additionally impact your general health, not least due to increased cortisol. Once again, this may harm performance levels during sessions as well as long-term physical development. Hitting your goals will become far tougher.

Dietary Choices

It’s an old cliche, but you can’t outrun a bad diet. By now, you should appreciate the importance of smarter food choices. However, it is very easy to overlook simple issues that could ruin an otherwise healthy plan. Weighing out your ingredients can be very useful as many people underestimate the volume of what they consume. Oils and sauces need measuring too.

Meanwhile, liquid calories often get miscalculated. Asking “does oat milk help with weight loss?” can help you integrate it into your diet. When you manage both calories and intolerances, which could cause inflammation, you’ll be far more likely to succeed.

Clothing Choices

Looking good in the gym or on the track doesn’t only make you feel good. It can actively increase your performance levels and prevent minor injuries. While you don’t have to spend crazy money on devices or the biggest brands, you do need the right attire. Otherwise, you may find that your progress slows, not least if you have to miss days to recover.

Footwear choices are vital. Asking “are carbon-plated running shoes worth it?” is the top question for runners. Meanwhile, using breathable materials and supportive base layer clothes will make a difference. If nothing else, feeling uncomfortable in the gym can demotivate you.

Overlooked Health Factors That Impact Your Fitness

You might be ticking all the right boxes with your training and nutrition, yet still find yourself plateauing. In many cases, the answer lies in small, unseen habits that accumulate over time. From poor hydration to inconsistent sleep patterns, these seemingly minor choices can have a huge impact on recovery, energy levels and overall performance.

Overlooked aspects of your health, including sexual health, can also play a part. Undiagnosed infections may affect energy levels or cause general discomfort that interferes with workouts. This is where greater self-awareness comes in. Tools like food logs, fitness trackers or even at-home testing can provide valuable insight into what’s really going on beneath the surface. Taking care of your full health picture supports more consistent progress toward your goals.

Your Goals

Finally, it’s difficult to follow the right path if you cast your eyes to the wrong destination. Simply “getting fit” isn’t enough. You must learn to set SMART fitness goals that align with your personal situation. Some people chase aesthetic rewards, others focus solely on performance. The key is to always choose something that you’ll be motivated to achieve.

Likewise, the use of measurable targets along the way should enable you to stay on the right path. Consistency is king especially in those moments where natural motivation falls. Do not fall into the trap of restricting yourself through ill-informed goals and choices.
