What Your Church Can Do to Cultivate a Culture of Giving

People struggle when asked to give money, even when their church asks for funds. Church leaders must recognize this and find a way to build a stronger culture of generosity. They also need to help their people give. Making it easy to do so will increase donations.

Leading By Example

Leaders must lead by example when raising money for a church. They must share their hard-earned money with the church if they expect their congregation to do the same. In addition, they need to read scripture and see that teaching others to give is easy. The Bible has plenty of examples of how this can be done.

Develop a Message

Every church needs a tithe and offering message that speaks to the congregation. Again, referring to scripture is one way to develop a message that truly resonates with church members. All church leaders should be a part of this process because it will train and raise them to do the same in the future. Prayer may also be included during offering time. Ask the church members to pray for the funds needed to continue sharing God’s word.

Generosity and Bible Stewardship

The pastor should speak on generosity during the sermon several times a year. They may use the sermon to reinforce truth regarding sharing what one has with others and addressing the aspect of giving. Many pastors choose to host the sermon during the church’s annual giving campaign. The sermon may focus on tithing, providing funds for missions, and going above and beyond in other ways. This message does not need to be delivered in one sermon. It can be preached over several weeks to allow church members to grasp the message and dig further into what the sermon says.

Small Groups Discussions

Many churches host small groups where members can dig deeper into God’s word and discuss financial journeys and stewardship. Church leaders may also sit down with entrepreneurs who are part of the congregation to discuss the unique challenges they face and the challenges the church faces when it comes to staying afloat, even in difficult times.

Make Giving Easy

Churches need to ensure their members can easily donate funds. There should be an online option, an option for giving on their mobile devices, and an in-person option. The church should also set up a way for members to make regular contributions without any effort. They won’t need to consider the donation because it will be handled automatically.

Share the Results

Share the results of giving campaigns with church members. Church leaders often ignore data and don’t share the results with the congregation. Church members may then question where their money is going and what it is used for. They may hesitate to give in the future because they are worried their money is not being used properly. In addition, this data is helpful to church leaders because it allows them to know attendance numbers and giving trends.

Church members will be happy to support their leaders’ efforts. Doing so requires the church to build a culture of generosity and make giving easy. When church members can give money effortlessly, they are more willing to donate. However, the church must ensure that the congregation knows how these funds are used so people feel comfortable turning their hard-earned money over to those in charge.
