Cavapoo Dog: What to Know About the Cavapoo

Posted on November 18, 2025July 20, 2026 By Becky

Cavapoos are sweet dogs that often bear a resemblance to teddy bears. These dogs are loving, gentle, and friendly, and they usually make a great companion for a family, even families with younger children. If you are thinking about adding a cavapoo dog to your family, it’s important to understand this breed and what the cavapoo dog adoption process might look like. Our guide gives you an overview of all of these essentials so you can adopt the right cavapoo dog for your lifestyle.

What Is the Cavapoo?

The cavapoo is a mix between the cavalier King Charles spaniel and the toy, standard, or miniature poodle. This dog breed can come in a range of sizes, and they are often seen as family companions or lapdogs. Your cavapoo will feel very much like a member of your family, and these dogs love to be involved in everything that you do. If you are looking to welcome one of these affectionate pups into your home, dedicated breeders like Tiny Tail Doodles specialize in raising healthy, well-socialized puppies that make the perfect lifelong companions.

It’s important to note that if you are planning to adopt a cavapoo, you should not leave them home alone for long periods at a time – these dogs can get anxious, and they may become destructive or lonely if you are at work ten hours a day.

Where Can I Buy a Cavapoo?

For the most part, you will need to purchase your cavapoo dog from a breeder. These dogs are what is known as a designer breed, and they are not likely to occur naturally or end up in shelters. This is especially true if you are looking for a specific size of cavapoo.

That being said, it’s important to support breeders who are ethical and reputable, and those who put the health and safety of the dogs in their care first. For instance, breeders like Maple Grove Cavaliers tend to focus on raising healthy, well-socialized cavapoos and can guide prospective owners through the adoption process responsibly. Do ample research on local shelters, breed-specific rescues, and ethical breeders before making a choice on where to buy your cavapoo from.

We highly recommend staying away from puppy shops and shady online cavapoo listings, as these may be sourced from backyard breeders or puppy mills.

Will My Cavapoo Be a Restricted Breed?

Cavapoos are rarely a restricted breed as these dogs are not known for being dangerous or aggressive in any way. You may note that some apartment complexes or landlords restrict all breeds with a “no-pet policy”. You would need to avoid these apartments with your cavapoo, or you may need to register your cavapoo as an emotional support animal to make sure they can live at your side, no matter what.

Are Cavapoos Good With Kids?

Cavapoos are notable for being very good with children, and these dogs are generally quite sweet and tolerant of children of all ages. That being said, we don’t recommend leaving very young children unattended with your cavapoo, and you should teach your children how to properly interact with dogs, including reading dog body language, to ensure safety on all sides.

With proper monitoring and education for your children, your cavapoo dog can become their lifelong companion and partner in crime.

How to Care for Your Cavapoo Dog

Cavapoos are not the most high-maintenance breed, which many individuals are fond of. Your dog will need two to three moderate-length walks each day, in addition to some dedicated playtime and toys to keep them busy when you aren’t around. You should try to incorporate training into your cavapoo’s daily life to keep them mentally stimulated, and don’t hesitate to bring your cavapoo on as many adventures as possible.

Vet visits should be at least annual for your cavapoo, and you should make an effort to keep them fed with healthy food, in addition to limiting treats and human food, as these dogs tend to have more sensitive stomachs as a breed.

Your New Cavapoo Dog Best Friend

Cavapoo dogs are some of the most delightful canine companions, and you can add a cavapoo to your life by adopting from a breed-specific rescue or purchasing a cavapoo from a breeder. If you are considering a cavapoo best friend, make sure you understand how to care for this breed and that you have taken the time to ensure you can give your cavapoo dog the life they deserve at your side.
