The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), also known as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans, is a vital ligament in a dog’s knee joint. It provides stability by preventing the shin bone from sliding forward excessively relative to the thigh bone during leg movement. Understanding the Problem

Incision and Exposure

The veterinarian makes an incision on the front of the knee joint to access the tibia (shin bone).

Osteotomy (Bone Cut)

A curved cut is made through the upper portion of the tibia.

Tibial Plateau Rotation

The top section of the tibia is rotated backward to a specific angle, ensuring proper alignment and preventing the abnormal forward movement of the tibia.

Plate and Screw Fixation

A metal plate is attached to the tibia using screws to stabilize the bone in its new position. 

Closure

The surgical site is sutured closed.
