What Every Mom Needs to Know About Sending Out Graduation Announcements

Posted on January 22, 2025March 27, 2026 By Becky

Any time you have a child graduating it is a such a happy moment for your child and for your family, and it is the result of your child’s long hours of hard work, growth, and the opportunity to build a better future.  You, as a mom, have been there for the late night study sessions, the last minute projects, and the endless extracurricular activities. Now is the time to start ordering graduation invitations to share this joy with your loved ones. These announcements are not just cards, they are a celebration, a keepsake and a way to express gratitude and appreciation for your graduate’s achievements in a heartfelt manner.  So that is why I have put together some important tips on why and how to send them out to prevent some of the potential mistakes when creating and getting them out the door.

Why Graduation Announcements Matter

  • Celebrating a Milestone: Graduation announcements are a great way to share your child’s big accomplishment with friends and family who may not be able to attend the ceremony. Whether it’s to celebrate them graduating from high school, college, or another academic program it is a great way to honor their hard work and dedication.
  • Creating a Keepsake: Both you and your graduate will enjoy a timeless memento in well done picture graduation invitations. They are a beautiful way to capture this time and can be kept with your yearbooks and other keepsakes.
  • Connecting with Loved Ones: As life gets busier, graduation announcements are a wonderful way to update distant relatives and family friends about your child’s success. It’s a personal touch that keeps loved ones in the loop and builds stronger bonds.
  • Marking the Occasion Properly: This achievement deserves recognition. A formal announcement shows your graduate that their hard work is important, and they get the recognition they

Avoiding Pitfalls When Sending Graduation Announcements

With graduation announcements being so meaningful there can be some prep work to get them ready. These are some mistakes to avoid.:

  • Waiting Too Long: When it comes to graduation announcements, timing is everything. It is recommended to send them out 4-6 weeks before the ceremony or celebration. This way, recipients will have time to congratulate and make arrangement to come to a party, or in some other way acknowledge the graduate.
  • Neglecting to Proofread: This can make the graduation announcement look unpolished if there are errors on it. It is very important to proofread the text for accuracy, names, dates and addresses. It is also important to have someone else double check it for mistakes that you may have missed as mistakes can easily happen but these are important enough to take that extra minute to triple check.
  • Skipping Personalization: These cards will turn into a keepsake for the graduate. So make sure to add their personality and a list the accomplishments.  As time goes on these will turn into a cherished memento so make sure they are unique.
  • Overlooking Proper Etiquette: Double check your guest list. Graduation announcements are not to be confused with the invitations to the party or ceremony, so include the purpose of the card in the language.  If you are also inviting them to celebrate, then mention that too, but separately.
  • Underestimating Postage Needs: Make sure to verify the weight and size of your announcements to make sure they meet the standard postage requirements. If you are including extras such as photos or inserts then the cost may rise and the last thing you want is the cards getting returned because of a postage oversight.

Tips for Stress-Free Graduation Announcements

  • Start Early: As soon as the graduation details are confirmed, begin planning your announcements and putting together your list of friends and family that will be receiving them. That way you have plenty of time to choose a design, gather addresses and send them out.
  • Choose Quality Stationery: Since graduation announcements are keepsakes, it is recommended that you use high quality materials. Many services, such as Basic Invite, provide customizable designs and premium paper options which make your announcements more distinctive and can be customized and ordered online.
  • Organize Addresses: It is so important to keep an updated list of family and friends to ensure no one is left out. An address book or a digital spreadsheet can be useful in easily tracking them.
  • Add a Personal Touch: Make sure to include a short handwritten note or a favorite quote that you think resonates with the graduate’s journey. These small details make a big difference.

Sending out graduation announcements is a great way to celebrate your child’s success and to share their successes with those who care about them. So avoid some of the most common pitfalls by getting an earlier start on creating these amazing keepsakes and you’ll create a lasting memory that honors such a big accomplishment. So, take the time to plan and personalize your announcements—your graduate deserves nothing less!
