What Disqualifies You From LASIK? 5 Factors Doctors Look At

Posted on April 24, 2026 By Becky

LASIK has a strong track record, and patient satisfaction is still very high. The FDA says more than 95% of participants in its LASIK quality-of-life project were satisfied with their vision after surgery. At the same time, good results depend a lot on choosing the right patient at the right time. Doctors do not look at your glasses prescription alone. They also check how steady your vision has been, how healthy your cornea is, and whether your eyes can heal well after the procedure.

Whether you are looking into options locally in Bellevue where laser vision correction is widely available or just starting your research, the evaluation step is where most decisions are actually made. A surgeon is trying to lower risk, protect your long-term vision, and decide whether LASIK is truly the best fit, or whether another option would make more sense.

Here are five things that may disqualify you.

1. Your Prescription Still Changes

One of the first things doctors check is whether your vision has been stable for at least a year. If your prescription is still moving around, LASIK may not be the right step yet. The laser can reshape the cornea, but it cannot stop your eyes from continuing to change afterward. That is often why people considering LASIK in Bellevue hear doctors spend so much time comparing old prescriptions, contact lens history, and recent vision changes before talking about surgery dates.

Surgical centers such as Bellevue Precision Vision also look at whether another option like PRK, SMILE, or EVO ICL makes more sense when stability is still in question. That kind of pause can feel annoying in the moment. Still, it usually protects you from having surgery before your eyes are ready for it.

2. Your Corneas Are Too Thin Or Irregular

LASIK works by reshaping the cornea, so the cornea has to be healthy enough to handle that change. If it is too thin, weak, or oddly shaped, doctors may say no to LASIK because removing tissue could make the eye less stable over time.

This is also why corneal mapping matters so much during the exam. A person can have a prescription that looks treatable on paper, yet still not be a safe LASIK candidate once those scans are reviewed.

Irregular corneal shape can be a problem even when thickness is not the only issue. Conditions such as keratoconus or other signs of corneal ectasia raise concern because the cornea may already be prone to bulging or thinning.

In those cases, doctors may point a patient toward PRK, EVO ICL, or another treatment instead of LASIK.

3. You Already Struggle With Dry Eye

Dry eye is one of the biggest reasons doctors slow down or reconsider LASIK. The flap created during LASIK can affect corneal nerves for a while, and that can make dryness worse during recovery. The FDA’s LASIK quality-of-life project found that up to 28% of participants who had no dry eye symptoms before surgery reported dry eye symptoms three months later. That does not mean LASIK always causes long-term problems, but it does explain why doctors take preexisting dryness seriously.

This is where a lot of people are surprised. Mild irritation from screens, contact lenses, or air conditioning may seem minor day to day, yet it can matter during a LASIK workup. If the eye surface is already struggling, healing may be rougher and vision quality may not be as sharp or steady as expected. Sometimes the answer is to treat the dryness first. Sometimes the better answer is choosing a different procedure altogether.

4. You Have An Eye Condition LASIK Cannot Fix Safely

LASIK is designed to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is not a cure-all for every vision problem. Doctors may disqualify someone who has certain eye diseases or eye changes that would make results less predictable.

This can include things like keratoconus, active eye disease, or other corneal problems. It can also include prescriptions that fall outside what LASIK can treat well for that specific eye. In practice, this is why a surgeon may say, “You are a good candidate for laser vision correction, just not LASIK.” That difference matters. Saying no to one procedure does not always mean saying no to clearer vision.)

5. Timing, Hormones, Or Health Issues Make Results Less Predictable

Sometimes the eye is not the only issue. Timing matters too. The FDA says pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuating hormones, some diseases such as diabetes, and certain medicines that affect vision can make refractive error less stable. When that happens, doctors may delay LASIK until things settle. It is not always a permanent “no.” Many times, it is a “not right now.”

This is one of the easiest disqualifiers to misunderstand because it sounds temporary, and it often is. Still, temporary factors can affect measurements, healing, and comfort. If your body is going through a phase where vision or tear function is shifting, doctors want to avoid locking in a correction based on numbers that may change a few months later. Waiting can feel disappointing, but it is often the smarter call.

Wrapping Up

LASIK screening is really a safety check before it is a sales conversation. Doctors are looking for the people most likely to get clear, steady results without creating new problems. So if you are told you do not qualify, that does not always mean the door is closed. It may simply mean your eyes need more time, more treatment first, or a different procedure that fits you better.
