Potaje

From Spain to Your Table: How to Prepare a Traditional Potaje with Gastronomic Spain

Posted on November 4, 2025November 4, 2025 By Becky

Right, can we talk about how utterly brilliant Spanish food is for a minute? I mean, we all love a good paella or tapas night, but there’s this whole world of proper homestyle Spanish cooking that deserves way more attention. And today, I’m absolutely delighted to tell you about potaje – basically Spain’s answer to the ultimate comfort stew.

Now, I’ll be honest. Before I properly got into Spanish cooking, I thought it was all gazpacho and jamón (not complaining about either, mind you). But potaje? This is the stuff Spanish grandmothers have been making for centuries. It’s hearty, it’s warming, and it’s exactly what you need when the British weather is doing its thing and you’re craving something that feels like a proper hug in a bowl.

What Actually Is Potaje?

So potaje is essentially a traditional Spanish stew, usually made with pulses like chickpeas or lentils, vegetables, and often some lovely bits of chorizo or morcilla (Spanish black pudding – stay with me here, it’s gorgeous). Every region in Spain has their own version, and honestly, every family probably has their secret recipe that’s been passed down for generations.

The thing I absolutely love about potaje is that it’s properly aligned with the Mediterranean diet – you know, the one that everyone raves about for being packed with fiber, antioxidants, and good quality proteins. It’s the kind of meal where you can feel virtuous about eating something healthy whilst simultaneously feeling like you’re treating yourself. Win-win, right?

My Potaje Journey (AKA: The Great Ingredient Hunt)

Here’s where I have to admit something slightly embarrassing. The first time I decided to make proper Spanish potaje at home, I spent an absolute age traipsing around South East London trying to find the right ingredients. If you want to buy Iberian chorizo, Spanish chickpeas, Iberian bacon and all those other authentic bits, it’s not always straightforward in the UK. I’m talking authentic Spanish chickpeas (yes, they really do taste different), proper Iberian chorizo, and Spanish smoked paprika that actually tastes like it’s meant to.

Don’t get me wrong – I love a good ingredient hunt. But when you’ve got three kids doing after-school activities, work deadlines looming, and someone’s inevitably forgotten their PE kit, spending three hours visiting different shops to find one ingredient isn’t exactly practical, is it?

And that’s when I discovered something rather brilliant.

Potaje

Enter Gastronomic Spain: Your Spanish Cupboard, Delivered

Okay, so this isn’t me being all salesy (you know that’s not my style), but I genuinely need to tell you about Gastronomic Spain because they’ve honestly made my life so much easier. If you’ve ever wanted to buy Spanish products online without the hassle, this is it. They’re an online Spanish products store that basically brings proper Spanish gastronomy straight to your door, wherever you are in Europe.

The mission behind Gastronomic Spain is dead simple: they want to bring the best of Spanish food culture to your kitchen without you having to actually go to Spain (although, let’s be real, we’d all quite fancy a trip to San Sebastián right about now). They work directly with Spanish producers and suppliers to source authentic products – we’re talking the real deal, not the watered-down stuff you sometimes find in generic supermarkets.

How It Actually Works

The whole process is ridiculously straightforward. You hop onto their website, browse through over 1,500 Spanish products (I know, right?), pop what you fancy in your basket, and boom – it arrives at your door. You’ll have your Spanish products with just one click, delivered straight to your door, wherever you are in Europe.

The bit that really sold me? They offer free shipping when you spend over €79.99 or €89.99 depending on where you are in Europe. Plus, they’ve got both land and air shipping options, so you can choose whether you want your goodies quickly or you’re happy to wait a bit longer to save some pennies.

I’ve ordered from them a few times now, and honestly, it feels like getting a little piece of Spain delivered through the letterbox. The kids always get excited when they see the package arrive – although that might be because they know there’s usually some Spanish chocolate tucked in there somewhere.

Why I’m Slightly Obsessed with Spanish Stews

Here’s the thing – I’m all about meals that don’t require me to be a Michelin-starred chef but still taste like I’ve made a proper effort. Spanish stews tick every single box:

They’re Actually Healthy: Mediterranean diet for the win. When you’re looking for Mediterranean diet products that actually taste good, Spanish stews are where it’s at. We’re talking legumes, vegetables, good quality proteins, olive oil, paprika with antioxidants – it’s basically a nutritional powerhouse disguised as comfort food.

They’re Budget-Friendly: Pulses are cheap, they go far, and they’re filling. When you’re feeding a family of five, this matters.

They’re Proper Comfort Food: There’s something deeply satisfying about a bowl of warm stew, especially when the weather outside is grim (so, you know, most of the year in the UK).

They’re Flexible: Vegetarian? Easy – skip the meat. Want more veg? Chuck them in. Need it spicier? Add more paprika. They’re very forgiving dishes.

They’re Make-Ahead Friendly: These stews actually taste better the next day. Make a big batch on Sunday, and you’ve sorted lunches for the week. Future you will be very grateful.

A Bit About the Traditional Recipe (For When You’re Feeling Ambitious)

If you do fancy making potaje completely from scratch (and honestly, it’s quite therapeutic on a Sunday afternoon when you’ve got time), the basic principle is pretty straightforward:

You start by soaking your chickpeas or lentils overnight (or use tinned if you’re short on time – no judgment here). Then you sauté some onions and garlic in olive oil, add your chorizo or bacon, throw in the pulses with some stock, add vegetables like spinach, chard, or potatoes, season with Spanish paprika, and let it all simmer away until everything’s tender and the flavours have melded together beautifully.

The smell that fills your kitchen while it’s cooking? Absolutely divine. The kids always come wandering in asking what’s for dinner, which makes a nice change from the usual “Do we have to eat vegetables?” routine.

But here’s my honest take: sometimes you just want the flavours without the faff. And that’s completely okay. I’m a firm believer that getting good quality prepared foods that you can doctor up a bit is a perfectly valid life choice, especially when you’re juggling work, kids, and trying to maintain some semblance of a social life.

Making Spanish Cooking Part of Your Regular Rotation

Since discovering Gastronomic Spain and properly getting into Spanish cooking, it’s become a regular thing in our house. The kids now know what chorizo is (victory!), they’ll actually eat lentils without complaining (miracle!), and my husband has stopped looking confused when I announce we’re having potaje for dinner.

I think what I love most is that it’s expanded our family food repertoire beyond the usual British standards. Don’t get me wrong – I love a good shepherd’s pie or roast dinner – but having these Spanish options in the mix has made mealtimes more interesting and, dare I say it, a bit more exciting.

Plus, there’s something quite lovely about sharing food traditions from other cultures with your kids. We’ve had some great conversations about Spanish regions, different cooking methods, and why every country seems to have their own version of “stew with pulses and stuff in it.” Educational and delicious – I’m calling that a parenting win.

Making Your Own Potaje: Where to Start

Right, so you’re convinced you want to try making potaje (good choice), but you’re thinking, “Where on earth do I get proper Spanish ingredients in the UK without the aforementioned three-hour shopping marathon?”

This is where Gastronomic Spain becomes your new best friend. Let me walk you through some absolute essentials.

The Holy Trinity of Spanish Stews

If you’re going to get into Spanish cooking properly – and I really think you should because it’s delicious and actually quite forgiving – these are the three products you absolutely need to know about:

Chickpea Stew (Potaje de Garbanzos)

Let’s start with the classic. Chickpeas Stew Litoral with Gastronomic Spain is one of those brilliant options for when you want authentic Spanish flavours but you’re absolutely not in the mood for a cooking marathon. The Litoral brand is hugely popular in Spain – it’s what actual Spanish families buy when they want something quick but proper.

I always keep a few tins in the cupboard for those evenings when everyone’s starving, someone’s got football practice in an hour, and you still need to produce something that resembles a nutritious meal. Heat it up, serve it with some crusty bread, and suddenly you’re a domestic goddess. Easy.

Lentil Stew (Potaje de Lentejas)

Now, lentils hold a special place in Spanish cuisine. Every Spanish household has their own lentil stew recipe, and it’s proper comfort food. The Lentil Stew Litoral with Gastronomic Spain is another one of those game-changers for busy families.

Lentils are absolutely brilliant for you – packed with iron, protein, and fiber – and this version comes with chorizo and vegetables already in there. My 8-year-old, who can be a bit particular about her food (understatement of the year), actually requests this one. When a child voluntarily asks for pulses, you know you’re onto something good.

Asturian Bean Stew (Fabada Asturiana)

Right, this one’s a bit more of an acquired taste, but stick with me because it’s absolutely gorgeous. Fabada is from Asturias in northern Spain, and it’s rich, hearty, and perfect for those proper cold, drizzly British days when you need something seriously substantial.

The Asturian Bean Stew Litoral with Gastronomic Spain contains fabes (big white beans from Asturias), chorizo, morcilla, and panceta. It’s definitely a weekend lunch sort of dish – one of those meals where you eat it, feel completely satisfied, and then need a little sit down afterwards. In the best possible way.

The Verdict: Get Some Spanish Stew in Your Life

Look, I’m not saying Spanish stews are going to solve all your problems (although a good bowl of potaje on a rough day does come pretty close). But I am saying that if you’re looking to shake up your weeknight dinners with something that’s genuinely tasty, reasonably healthy, and doesn’t require you to have a culinary degree, traditional Spanish recipes like potaje are absolutely worth exploring.

And thanks to places like Gastronomic Spain, you don’t even need to plan a trip to Madrid to stock up on ingredients. Although, let’s be real, we’ll absolutely use “ingredient shopping” as an excuse for a Spanish holiday at some point, won’t we?

So go on, give it a go. Order yourself some proper Spanish chickpea stew, warm up a pot, tear off some crusty bread for dunking, and transport yourself to a Spanish kitchen for half an hour. Your taste buds (and probably your family) will thank you.

And if you try it and love it, come tell me! I’m always up for chatting about food discoveries, especially when they involve eating delicious things and calling it “cultural exploration.”

Happy cooking (or happy heating up, no judgment either way)!
