Tips on working on yourself in a positive way

Posted on February 13, 2026 By Becky

No matter your age, it’s always important to be working on yourself positively. Developing yourself can help you in many areas of your life. Your mental health will benefit, your progress at work may develop, your fitness will improve, and you will feel more confident in yourself. As you grow and evolve, those around you will notice too, with friends and colleagues often seeing the positive changes before you even realise them yourself.

To make positive changes, there are many things you can do. Fitness is a great place to start, as this is extremely important for your overall health. Booking yourself onto online courses to learn new things – such as a new language – can help you in your career. Surrounding yourself with positivity is something we would highly recommend, as your environment has an impact on how you are as a person.

To help get you started, we have put together our guide on ways to work on yourself in a positive way. Keep on reading for six different tips that we think will make a big difference and help you get back on track to feeling more positive about yourself and those around you.

Exercising regularly

In so many different guides, exercise will appear near the top, and there is no surprise why. Exercise is so important for numerous reasons as it helps to reduce stress, boost mood, increase energy levels and improve overall confidence. These are all changes that will help you in a positive way. Whether you want to work out alone and run, or join a sports club and play football, tennis or rugby, finding a form of exercise you genuinely enjoy makes it far easier to stay consistent and experience long-term benefits. It is recommended that you exercise around two to three times a week at a moderate intensity. Something that we found can really help is ensuring you do your 10,000 steps a day – if you sit at the desk all day for work, this helps get you up and moving about, instead of sitting all day and feeling restless.

Surround yourself with positive people

In life, the people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on how you act and feel. If the people around you are negative, this can reflect on you, making you feel more negative toward those around you. If the people you associate with are all positive and happy, then you are often a more positive person. Try to find people who you know are positive and always going to build you up and make you a better person – you’ll be amazed at how much of a difference this can make.

Learn something new

So many people stop learning once they leave school. Yes, it’s nice to take a break, but if you want to develop and improve yourself in a positive way, then learning something new as you get older is very important. Learning something new helps keep your mind active, builds confidence, and opens the door to new interests and opportunities. Depending on what you are interested in, you could sign up to learn a new language, learn to play a musical instrument or develop your cooking skills – there are so many different things you can do. When signing up for the course, we would recommend you read up on the reviews to ensure that previous people who have signed up for the course had a good experience.

Improve your diet

Just like exercising, diet also plays a big role in your overall health. When your diet is good, and you are eating healthy food you’ll find yourself feeling more upbeat and positive. When it’s bad, this is when you may feel sluggish and tired. Throughout life, your diet will go through its ups and downs. But when it isn’t at its best, this is when you should start to pay some attention to it. Try to make sure you are eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, as well as drinking plenty of water. A trick to eat more vegetables is to put them into a sauce so you don’t notice you are eating them. For example, putting peas and sweetcorn into a spaghetti bolognese is an easy one to do.

Set realistic goals

Setting goals is an important part of working on yourself, but it’s essential to keep them realistic and achievable. Unrealistic expectations can quickly lead to you feeling frustrated and burned out, whereas smaller, manageable goals help you build confidence and motivation over time. If there is something big you are currently aiming for, try to break this down into smaller targets, this way you track your progress and feel a sense of achievement when you achieve these smaller steps.

Try to maintain healthy routines

Having a routine is something a lot of people can benefit from, and it will help you feel more positive. Routines help provide a structure to your day and bring a certain level of calm and stability. A routine can be anything from making sure you take a certain amount of time away from a screen to ensuring you get enough sleep and are always keeping your home tidy – being tidy can help your mind feel more tidy.

Don’t put too much pressure on trying to improve yourself. It’s all about being positive and taking positive steps, which could mean small baby steps or larger steps, depending on how you feel. Start by making a few changes; this way, it’s more realistic to stick to and then, as things become more routine, start to implement other changes – such as starting with setting realistic goals and improving your diet, then learning something new and exercising more regularly.

What changes are you going to make to your life moving forward? Which of the above suggestions do you think will make the greatest difference?
