The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Older Vehicle

Posted on September 10, 2025March 19, 2026 By Becky

Cars are a significant investment, so it makes sense to want our cars to last us a long time, and to continue operating at peak performance for as long as possible. To maximise the lifespan of your vehicle, read on for our top tips for caring for your older car to keep it running like new.

Monitor Wear and Tear

With the passage of time, certain car components naturally wear down, and it’s important to keep a close eye on them. Tyres, suspension parts, and belts are especially vulnerable in older vehicles, and failing to spot issues early can lead to breakdowns or even safety concerns on the road. By regularly inspecting these parts and replacing them as needed, you’ll keep your car running reliably and efficiently.

Even minor cracks, uneven tyre wear, or loose belts can signal bigger problems on the horizon. A quick check every few weeks can make a world of difference, not only to your car’s longevity but also to your peace of mind. If you’re unsure which replacements are best for your vehicle, you can click here to browse tyres by manufacturer and find options suited to your specific car model.

Protect the Exterior and Interior

As cars age over the years, they are at an increasing risk of rusting and deteriorating. To avoid your older car suffering a similar fate, regularly washing, waxing, and generally cleaning the interior and exterior of your car is the most certain way of maintaining your car’s condition and keeping it in its true glory. Invest in a tried and tested range of cleaning products for older cars and keep up a regular cleaning routine.

You can also ensure your car’s appearance and performance with high-quality rims that not only upgrade it but also offer better handling and durability on the road.

Additionally, during the times your car is parked up and not being actively driven, you can keep your vehicle protected from the elements, maintain its best appearance, and maximising its resale value by using a car tarpaulin. From rain and hail to blistering heat, the weather can be a cruel mistress when it comes to older car parts and materials. As such, a waterproof covering is the best way to avoid your car suffering from the wildly unpredictable UK weather.

Regular Maintenance and Servicing

Just as cleaning and covering a car protects its looks, used car warranty is essential to maintain your older car’s mechanical health and keep it running smoothly. Older vehicles, in particular, benefit greatly from consistent checkups. All cars over three years old should be serviced annually, but cars over fifteen years old could benefit from an additional maintenance check at the garage annually, too. In essence, every six months, an older car should be taken to the garage for either a maintenance check or a service.

If in doubt, simply follow the manufacturer’s service schedule, including oil changes, brake checks, and fluid replacements. This will be key to preventing small problems from developing into costly repairs down the line. Remember: a well-maintained engine runs smoother, lasts longer, and keeps your vehicle roadworthy for years to come.

Consider a Used Car Warranty

Whilst we always hope for smooth travels and can do a lot of checks ourselves to keep our cars healthy, it’s wise to be prepared for any eventuality. Vehicle parts can fail, so having a used car warranty in place will give you the peace of mind you need.

As cars age, the risk of unexpected mechanical failures tends to rise. A used car warranty can offer welcome reassurance, covering the cost of parts and repairs that might otherwise come as a nasty surprise. While not every issue will be covered, a good warranty can ease the financial burden that often comes with owning an older vehicle. It’s worth exploring your options, too, as some used car warranties are tailored specifically for older cars. With the right cover in place, you can continue enjoying your car without the constant worry of what might go wrong next.
