The Health Traps of Older Homes (and How to Really Fix Them) Posted on December 8, 2025 By Becky Older homes, of course, have an abundance of character, and we can often overlook the pitfalls that come with these things because we’ve either spent years working towards a comfortable retirement or our dream home in an ideal location. We have to remember that a lot of issues can build up over time and often go unnoticed until they start causing symptoms like coughs, allergies, or persistent tiredness, and understanding the most common hazards and how to properly fix them instead of masking the problem is vital, so let’s show you how to keep a safe, cosy home in the right possible ways. Damp Mould and Indoor Air Older homes contain a ton of damp and mould. They thrive in poorly ventilated rooms, but also in cold corners and around hidden leaks. Mould spores and damp air can irritate the lungs, worsen asthma, and trigger allergies in both children and adults. Therefore, learning how to test for mould properly is a crucial first step. You can then distinguish between the cosmetic issue and a deeper problem like moisture within walls, floors, or ceilings. The real proper fixes go beyond a repaint. You have to address the source of the moisture, whether it’s a roof leak, unblocking air, or using a dehumidifier in permanently damp rooms. There are also fixes like upgrading single-glazed windows to double, or adding insulation to reduce those cold surfaces where condensation gathers. Poor Ventilation and Stuffy Rooms Many period homes were designed to breathe, but decades of sealed chimneys, painted-over vents, or blocked fireplaces leave them stuffy, meaning more condensation. Stale indoor air can accumulate pollutants from cooking, cleaning products, candles, and gas appliances, which contribute to headaches and tiredness. One of the most practical fixes is to improve the airflow. Extractor fans and open windows can make a big difference. Asbestos and Old Building Materials One of the biggest concerns in older homes is the fact that asbestos is still around in ceiling tiles, insulation boards, old floor tiles, pipe lagging, or textured coatings. Disturbing the asbestos releases tiny fibres that are easily inhaled and linked to serious lung diseases decades later. The key risk comes when these materials are drilled, sanded, or damaged during DIY renovation or routine maintenance. The best and ultimately safest fix is to avoid disturbing any suspicious materials and get a professional survey if your home was built or refurbished before the early 2000s. Outdated Heating and Cold Damp Spaces Hot and cold can come from inefficient boilers, patchy radiators, and poor insulation. The real fix involves both upgrading the heating and the fabric. Installing thermostatic valves, bleeding radiators, and balancing the overall system, as well as installing insulation wherever possible, can keep the whole home warmer and drier, cutting bills as well as health risks. It’s also important to remember that making these changes is all well and good, but we need to have the appropriate behaviours as well. Getting into the habit of decluttering will minimise dust and allergens, but it also means we can spot problems early and enjoy the charm of an older home without compromising our health.
