The Health Benefits Of Spring Cleaning

Posted on April 13, 2026 By Becky

Spring cleaning has a bit of a reputation, and not always a good one… It sounds like a lot of effort, like having to do a full day of sorting, scrubbing, and wishing you hadn’t started, but the truth is that once you actually get going, there’s going to be a turning point where you realise you’re doing a good thing. And when you remember that there are physical and mental health benefits to spring cleaning as well, you’ll be even more inclined to do it – keep reading to find out what they are.

It Helps Clear Your Head

There’s something about a cluttered space that definitely adds to your stress levels, and that’s the last thing you’ll want. However, the problem is that you’re not always going to notice it right away, but over time you’ll get more and more stressed about things, and feel bad.

So if you clean surfaces, organise cupboards, and get rid of things you don’t need – among various other jobs – you’ll find you have a lovely place to live in afterwards, and one that doesn’t make you feel tense and uncomfortable.

It Improves Air Quality

Dust, pet hair, and everyday debris builds up over time, especially in places you don’t tend to clean on a regular basis. That’s why spring cleaning is a good idea because it gives you a chance to tackle those areas, like behind furniture, inside cupboards, along skirting boards, and all the other areas you only realise are dirty when you properly look at them.

Once everything’s been aired out and properly cleaned, the whole house feels fresher, and that’s going to make a massive difference, especially if you spend a lot of time indoors.

It Helps Spot Hidden Issues

Spring cleaning tends to reveal things you might not have noticed otherwise, like small leaks, worn areas, or signs of pests and so on – they’re all things that can become more obvious when you’re moving things around and paying a bit more close attention to various parts of your home.

If you do notice anything unusual, like droppings or damage, it’s well worth looking into it early. Bringing in pest control at this stage, for example, can stop a small problem from becoming a much bigger one.

It Encourages Better Habits

Once you’ve done a proper clear-out, it’s a lot easier to keep things in order. After all, you’ve already made decisions around what you need and where it has to go, so daily tidying becomes quicker and less of a chore.

In other words, a bit of effort at the start definitely pays off later and means you should be able to keep your home a lot cleaner and tidier overall.

It Gets You Moving

Cleaning is also a lot more physical than it seems because you’ll be lifting, scrubbing, reaching, and moving things around – that can all be a good break from more sedentary routines which most of us fall into.

But not only are you doing a good thing when it comes to movement and physical exercise, when you look around at what you’ve done, you’ll get a good sense of achievement, which can boost your mood massively.

FAQs About the Health Benefits of Spring Cleaning

Why does spring cleaning improve mental health?
A clean and organised space can reduce stress and anxiety, helping you feel more in control and relaxed in your home environment.

Can spring cleaning really improve air quality?
Yes, removing dust, pet hair, and allergens—especially from hidden areas—can significantly improve indoor air quality.

How often should you do a deep clean?
A full deep clean is often done once or twice a year, but smaller regular cleans help maintain the benefits.

Is cleaning considered a form of exercise?
Yes, activities like vacuuming, scrubbing, and lifting can increase your heart rate and contribute to daily physical activity.

What areas are most important during spring cleaning?
Focus on areas that are often overlooked, such as behind furniture, inside cupboards, skirting boards, and vents.

Can spring cleaning help prevent health issues?
Keeping your home clean can reduce allergens, mould, and bacteria, which may help prevent respiratory issues and allergies.

How can I stay motivated to spring clean?
Break tasks into smaller jobs, set realistic goals, and focus on the end result—a cleaner, healthier living space.

What should I do if I find issues while cleaning?
Address them early. Whether it’s a leak, mould, or pests, dealing with problems quickly can prevent them from getting worse.
