The Dating App Paradox: Easy Connection, Fewer Lasting Matches

Posted on July 10, 2025 By Becky

Dating apps remain common across much of the world. They are simple to use and offer millions of people fast ways to meet. But while they make it easy to match and chat, fewer people than expected say they form real, long-term relationships through them. The numbers, trends, and user habits behind this reveal a problem in how people connect through screens.

From Many Users to Fewer Installs

In 2019, there were around 287.4 million people using dating apps. By 2024, that number had fallen to roughly 237.1 million. This drop is most seen in places like the United States, where many people have already tried or tired of the most common platforms. Still, those who do use these apps remain active, and the companies behind them continue to bring in more money each year through paid options. So while fewer people may be downloading, many who do are spending time and sometimes money on extra features.

Where Most People Swipe

The United States has the biggest market for dating apps. Tinder is the most downloaded option in almost every state and brings in more than half the parent company’s total in-app spending. Tinder is the best-known brand, with 86 out of 100 Americans having heard of it. More than half of those who know about Tinder choose it over others. Bumble follows with about one-fourth of the market, growing especially quickly on the coasts and among women. Hinge now ranks third but is the fastest-growing of the three, nearly tripling its users since 2017. Q3 of 2024 marked a record high for Hinge’s downloads.

Tinder and Bumble do not publish their yearly user counts in detail, but industry reports put Bumble above 50 million active users worldwide, with more than 4 million using it in the United States each year. Hinge sits at 30 million global users, up from only 2.4 million seven years ago.

App Use by Age and Gender

Younger adults make up most of the users across all major apps. More than 70 percent of Bumble’s members are under 35. The gap between men and women is clear, with men making up about three-quarters of users on many platforms. On Bumble, women are closer to half of the audience, thanks to its features giving women more control over messaging.

Tinder draws a younger market, while Hinge and Bumble both see wider use from people in their late twenties and thirties. Despite these numbers, the balance of men to women often leads to challenges with match rates. Some apps that target more serious relationships or use different chat rules see a more even split.

High Swiping, Low Retention

People spend a lot of time on these apps. Tinder users clock in at about 35 minutes a day. But even with all this use, most people don’t keep to one app for long. The average monthly churn, where a user drops the app or stops logging in, is more than 60 percent. This means a typical user will try several platforms in a year.

Few users pay for extra features, such as boosts or ways to get noticed faster. For example, only about 4.6 percent of Bumble’s active users paid in 2023. Still, these paying users drive most of the revenue for the main dating companies.

Easy Matching, Harder Love

There is a clear break between what people hope for and what often happens. About 48 percent of users in the largest surveys say they use dating apps to seek a real relationship or love. Around four in ten admit they are mainly looking for something casual or fun, with many open to both at the same time. Hinge calls itself “the app designed to be deleted,” claiming to help those who want to settle down, but outcomes do not always match these goals.

Across all apps, only about 13 to 18 percent of users say they have found a serious partner on them within a year. Hinge performs a little better than the rest, with about a quarter of people saying they formed a lasting connection, although very few proceed to marry or live together. Tinder and Bumble users are less likely to report any long-term relationships that began through the app.

Why Relationship Goals Vary So Widely

Many people use dating apps for different reasons. Some want a long-term partner, some prefer casual meetings, and a few are open to situations like dating a sugar baby or chatting without expectations. These choices are shaped by personal goals, past outcomes, and cultural trends.

When one person hopes for a relationship while another is looking at options like casual dating, it can be harder to align. Dating apps bring all of these preferences together, so many matches do not lead to lasting connections. This mix often leads to mismatched conversations or unmet hopes.

User Fatigue and “Swipe Burnout”

Many people feel let down after using dating apps for months. This sense comes from many short chats, ghosting, and a process that can feel more like scrolling than connecting. Reports find that users describe the experience as draining over time. Most set up several matches, but only a few turn into dates. A large number never meet anyone in person.

This cycle may explain why most people quit or pause their accounts after a short stretch. Some report they keep the app in case they want to use it again, but most state that they lose faith in finding something lasting.

New Players, Old Outcomes

Even as the biggest apps keep their hold, new companies enter the market. In 2025, apps from Eastern Europe and Asia grew in the United States and parts of Europe. These target smaller groups and sometimes use new ways to match people, including extra questions or built-in video calls. Some offer stricter checks to cut fake accounts. Still, none have broken out to replace the largest providers.

Gen Z now uses more than one app at a time. But those in this age band report low satisfaction. They often chat with more people, but still move on quickly, rarely bringing app matches into the real world.

Looking for Solutions

The main companies are watching as users ask for better ways to meet people. New tools and options aim to cut fake profiles, slow down matches, and increase the chance for real chats. Still, no app claims to solve the problem yet. User reviews and surveys point to many looking for more quality and less volume.

What the Data Shows

The dating app paradox is defined by quick connection, high user interest, and strong spending on features, but with fewer real results. The facts show fewer lasting matches, falling user counts in mature markets, and more people leaving apps after short use. High brand awareness and long user sessions have not fixed the issue. The mix of different goals, uneven match rates, and common app fatigue keeps the focus on what dating apps actually offer. For now, easy access does not always mean more lasting love.
