natural light in the home

The Best Ways To Welcome Natural Light Into The Home

Posted on September 11, 2025 By Becky

The home is a space that should feel welcoming, fresh, and bright. However, depending on window placement and your own design choices, it may end up feeling a little gloomier than you would like. While the right lighting choices for the interior can do a lot to banish the darkness, natural light should be your big priority, and here, we’re going to look at some ways you can truly welcome it into the home.

Embrace Open Layouts

While we will look at how you can actually get more of that light in your home, it’s important to make sure that you’re not sabotaging or interrupting its journey when it gets in. You can do this by making sure it has plenty of open, uncluttered space ot move through. By embracing an open-plan layout or reducing the number of solid partitions in your home, you allow light to spread further into interior areas. Even partial changes, such as replacing heavy doors with glass-panelled ones or opting for open shelving instead of bulky cupboards, can improve brightness

Choose Fixtures That Bring In More Light

The biggest changes that you can make are in the fixtures that let light in, to begin with. If you have tiny windows that barely catch the light, then your home is naturally going to be gloomier. However, replacing them with large windows or even Juliet balconies can significantly brighten living areas as well. Floor-to-ceiling openings offer the best in both views and lighting, but there are also options that help you maintain a little more privacy, such as skylights, if you’re worried about anyone looking in.

Choose The Right Window Treatments

Your windows are only as effective as you make them, and the dressings and treatments you use can play a big role in how much natural light they let through. Heavy drapes and dark fabrics absorb light, making rooms feel smaller and dimmer. Instead, opt for lighter materials such as sheer curtains, linen, or voile, which diffuse sunlight while maintaining privacy. If you prefer to freely control the level of light and privacy, and how you balance the two, then Venetian or roller blinds can offer the adjustment you need to stay at your optimal comfort level across the board.

Mind Your Exterior Obstacles

Your windows and what’s inside them aren’t the only reason that your home might feel darker. Sometimes, the answer can be found outside. Overgrown greenery can obscure a lot of sunlight, regardless of which direction your window faces. Regularly pruning your trees and hedges, and keeping climbing plants away from the windows, can make sure that the path for natural light is clear. If you’re planting any new trees, try to consider their placement and eventually size so that they don’t end up blocking too much of the window.

With the tips above, you can make sure that you welcome in as much light as possible for as much of the day as possible. Hopefully, they help to brighten your space up some.
