Tackling The 3 Key Problems Affecting Your Office Server Room

Posted on April 15, 2025December 17, 2025 By Becky

You’ve got a server room in your office that contains loads of electronic equipment and could be described as your business’s beating heart. It’s responsible for keeping your business online by hosting your website and managing your data. Taking that into account, you’ll want to do everything to protect your server room and keep it functioning at all times.

But, like most things in life, this is easier said than done. Lots of issues can arise with a server room as many problems can affect it almost every day. You want to prevent these problems from getting your way, so let’s look at them and learn how to tackle them.

General Security Concerns

Having a server room means you must be aware of the general security threats posed against it. This room contains everything your business works for – losing this data can be catastrophic, which is why you should always create a backup. Moreover, a physical room can very easily be broken into, which means servers can be stolen or destroyed in an instant.

Take care of this issue by boosting security around your office, specifically focused on your server room. Begin with an access control system that restricts who can enter the server room. It should only be accessible to key members of your organisation or the IT support team. Then, you need another layer of security inside the room itself; this can involve the following:

  • Locks on any IT enclosures/cases
  • CCTV cameras showing what’s happening in the room

Both ideas sure up security just in case someone manages to break through the access control system. They’ll still need the right key to open the enclosures and access the servers – and they’ll also be on camera the whole time anyway.

Equipment Overheating

With so much electrical equipment in one place, overheating is bound to be a massive problem. Two main issues cause it in a server room:

  • Too many devices working overtime and generating heat
  • Dust build-up

To tackle the first problem and prevent overheating, you need to invest in a good cooling system. Traditionally, you may utilise various cooling fans to do this – but they’re not that efficient when you need to cool a lot of hardware at once. Improve things with direct to chip liquid cooling that cools down your equipment and stops it from getting too hot. It’s a fairly easy thing to install in IT cases or enclosures, and you can couple this with a general AC system that keeps the entire room as cool as can be. Ensuring reliable power delivery is also crucial, as sudden outages or voltage fluctuations can stress hardware and increase overheating risks. Additionally, implementing modular UPS units can help protect your equipment from power fluctuations and outages, which can contribute to overheating and hardware stress. Modular UPS Systems provide scalable backup power and maintain stable voltage levels, reducing the risk of sudden shutdowns or overheating caused by an inconsistent power supply.

When dust builds up around electrical equipment, it makes hardware less efficient. Your servers and other things need to work harder because the dust stops the devices from cooling down properly. You end up in a terrible loop where things get hotter and hotter until they overheat. Make sure you’re maintaining your server room and cleaning it regularly to remove as much dust as possible from fans and all the other hidden areas.

To reiterate, overheating is a significant problem because it can lead to equipment failure. Your server will go down because the hardware overheats and breaks. On a more serious note, severe overheating could cause electrical fires that create a real threat to your business.

Moisture & Corrosion

Electrical equipment has one massive enemy: moisture.

When there’s too much moisture in the air, it condenses on your equipment, and small droplets of water get into the circuitry or lay on the face of your hardware. The worst-case scenario is an electrical fire caused by sparks short-circuiting. Even if this doesn’t happen, moisture can cause corrosion that slowly eats away at the equipment in your server room.

It can, effectively, give your server room a degenerative disease that develops slowly. Everything seems okay for months, and then BAM, the server shuts down because of serious equipment malfunctions. You enter the IT enclosure and start taking things apart to notice horrible corrosion on the circuit boards.

The key way to prevent this is by creating a dry environment for your server room. Again, an AC system will help with this as it doubles up as a dehumidifier. You also need proper IT enclosures or cases that are designed to store electrical equipment and reduce the humidity levels inside.

To wrap things up, it’s time to be more aware of the three key problems affecting your office server room: security, overheating and corrosion. Undergo preventative measures to protect your server room from these problems and operate your business with more peace of mind. It’s not something you can afford to ignore any longer!
