Storage Drums: Types, Uses, and How to Choose the Right One

Posted on November 7, 2026 By Becky

A drum that works perfectly for one application can be completely wrong for another. The material, closure type, lining, and size all matter depending on what you’re storing, how you’re transporting it, and what regulations apply to your operation. Getting those details right before purchase is much easier than dealing with a compatibility failure or compliance issue after the fact. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of what to know.

What Are Storage Drums?

Storage drums are cylindrical industrial containers used to hold, transport, and dispense liquids, semi-liquids, and certain dry or granular materials. They’re made of steel, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and fiber, each suited to different applications. Standard capacities range from about 5 gallons to 55 gallons, with the 55-gallon size most common in industrial operations.

Businesses sourcing storage drums for industrial use will find that material and closure type are the two decisions that narrow the field fastest.

Types of Storage Drums

Steel drums are the default for flammable liquids, petroleum products, and applications where puncture resistance and structural rigidity matter. They handle temperature variation and physical stress better than plastic, and UN-rated steel drums meet the performance requirements for regulated hazardous material transport. Lined versions are available with phenolic, epoxy, or polyethylene interior coatings for contents that would react with bare metal.

HDPE drums are the better choice where corrosion resistance, lighter weight, and chemical compatibility with a broader range of substances are priorities. They’re commonly used in food and beverage processing, agricultural storage, and chemical distribution, provided the specific drum meets applicable FDA or regulatory requirements for the intended use.

Fiber drums serve a different purpose: they’re designed for dry goods, powders, and granular materials rather than liquids. They’re not suitable for wet or moisture-sensitive contents.

Common Uses Across Industries

Chemical manufacturers and distributors use storage drums for acids, solvents, cleaning compounds, and process chemicals, subject to material compatibility and transport requirements. Food processors may use approved HDPE drums for bulk ingredients and liquids when the container meets applicable food-contact standards. Agricultural operations store pesticides, liquid fertilizers, and feed additives in drums sized and rated for the specific contents.

Beyond those core uses, storage drums appear in waste containment, water storage, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and paint and coatings production. Their standardized dimensions make them compatible with existing dock equipment, drum handlers, and racking systems across most industrial facilities.

How to Choose the Right Storage Drum

Start with your contents. The material you’re storing determines whether you need steel, HDPE, or fiber, and whether a lined interior is required. Before purchasing, cross-reference the drum material with your specific contents to ensure chemical compatibility, especially for solvents, acids, or corrosives.

Next, consider closure type:

  • Open-head drums have a fully removable lid secured with a bolt ring, better suited for thicker materials, dry goods, or applications requiring regular interior access.
  • Tight-head drums have a fixed top with bung openings, better suited for liquids that don’t require frequent interior access and for sealed transport.

If the drum is to be used in regulated transport, confirm that it carries the appropriate UN certification for your hazard classification.

Finally, factor in condition:

  • New drums come with clean interiors and full manufacturer specifications, the safer choice for food-grade, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated applications.
  • Reconditioned drums are cleaned and inspected to industry standards and available at a lower price point. A practical option for non-food industrial storage where prior contents are documented and compatible with your intended use. Always request reconditioning records before committing.

Where to Source Storage Drums

Container Exchanger is an online marketplace for new and used industrial containers, including storage drums in steel and plastic across a range of sizes and configurations. Comparing listings from multiple sellers lets you find the right spec at a competitive price, with regional inventory options that can reduce freight costs.

Before purchasing, confirm the material type, lining details, closure configuration, and prior contents of each listing.
