Staying Entertained On A Road Trip: A Guide For Adults And Kids Alike

Posted on April 18, 2026 By Becky

You want to take your family on a road trip, but you’re concerned about how bored and/or cranky certain family members may get.

And you know we’re not just talking about the kids here! You know very well there’s a chance that you or your partner (or both) might just get a bit frustrated and grumpy as well.

And that’s OK – really it is. Road trips aren’t always fun fun fun, no matter if you’re 5 or 35.

But you do need to plan out a few things you can do to try and stay as entertained as possible when you’re on the road. Here’s what we mean.

Plan Some Opportunities to Waste a Bit of Energy

This is for all the parents out there! When you’ve got kids in the car and there’s a long journey ahead, those hours on the road are going to feel endless for them.

You might not find them all that enjoyable yourself, but you’re an adult – and adult brains are much better at knowing what a long time actually is! Kids, on the other hand, can complain after only half an hour of being strapped in and having to look out of the window.

And that’s why you’ll want to include a few ‘run around stops’ on your road trip schedule.

Somewhere like an RV ground, where you can hookup the vehicle for a few hours (or even the night), and then let the kids use the park as more of a playground. Some parks may even have an actual playground!

That way, when you get back in the car when you’re ready to go, the kids are more likely to want to take a nap. And that can make things a little less hectic for you up front.

Let Everyone Use Headphones

They’re the ticket you need to plug into your own little world, and that’s the kind of invaluable item to have on a family road trip. For teenagers and young adults in particular.

But both yourself and any younger kids can use headphones too, whether they’re playing on their Nintendo Switch or you want to listen to an audio book on your phone.

The driver (if that’s not you) then has free reign over the car radio, and can play whatever they like while everyone else is plugged in.

Make Some Activity Packs

Yes, for both the kids and the adults!

Their packs can have craft materials, stickers, and colouring pens in. Yours can have a good puzzle book, an interesting magazine, and an eye mask, just in case you want to have a nap yourself.

And both packs can have little snack pouches in, just in case anyone gets peckish before you stop for lunch.

Road trips do have their boring moments, for sure. But when you’re all crammed into the vehicle together, you can’t let those get on top of you. Stay entertained with a few more stops, headphones, and some fun activities.

Extra Tips for Staying Entertained on a Road Trip

Download everything in advance
Don’t rely on signal. Download films, playlists, podcasts, and games before you leave so you’re covered in low-signal areas.

Rotate seating if possible
If your setup allows it, switching seats can give everyone a new view and help break up the journey.

Bring a surprise element
Pack a few small “surprise” items like new snacks or mini games to hand out during longer stretches.

Use classic car games
Simple games like “I Spy”, the alphabet game, or “20 Questions” are easy and require no equipment.

Keep snacks organised
Having a designated snack bag or box helps avoid mess and makes it easier for everyone to grab what they need.

Set mini milestones
Break the journey into smaller goals, like reaching the next stop or landmark, to make the trip feel shorter.

Take turns choosing entertainment
Let each person pick music, podcasts, or games for a set amount of time to keep everyone involved.
