Sports Museums Across Europe for Sports Fans

Posted on September 21, 2026 By Becky

When drawing up a travel planning map, it is common to add art or history museums. However, a somewhat underexplored niche that can appeal to any sports fan, from amateur athletes to those who place sports bets at the best site 1xBet, is that of museums dedicated to the history of sports. Here, you will find museums that are a great option for stepping a little outside the traditional.

Olympic Museum in Athens

Greece is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and simply visiting Athens already makes it possible to feel the atmosphere of sports history. To enhance this even further, a museum entirely dedicated to the world’s greatest sporting event opened in 2021. The space features architecture designed to evoke sports and spans 3,500 square metres of pure history.

There are two main sections in the museum, one dedicated to the history of the Olympic Games from ancient Greece and the other featuring more subjective elements that reflect the values of sport in society. In other words, both together complete the perfect cycle of the Olympic spirit.

Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland

Although the Olympic Museum in Athens carries the weight of being located where it all began, the best-known museum on this theme is in Lausanne, Switzerland. The space is managed by the International Olympic Committee, the same institution that organises the Games, and therefore carries great official significance. It opened in 1993, has won important awards in the museum sector, and is one of the most visited in all of Switzerland.

In total, there are more than ten thousand pieces portraying the history of the Games. But beyond that, the museum also looks to the future, with many interactive exhibitions that take advantage of current technologies to enhance visitors’ immersive experience across the more than 3,000 square metres of the space. One of the objectives, according to the museum’s official pages, is to evoke all the emotion of the Olympic Games.

More than just appreciating history, a visit to the Olympic Museum can introduce visitors to lesser-known sports and disciplines. Some of these sports also appear in betting markets, where interest may increase around major international competitions and high-profile events.

In addition, those who choose to visit the Olympic Museum also have the chance to discover more of the city of Lausanne, a lesser-explored location in Switzerland that has good attractions for tourists.

Olympic Museums of specific countries

In addition to museums dedicated to the history of the Olympics as a whole, several European countries have their own museums focused on the history of local sport. One of the main highlights in this regard is the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch in Barcelona, Spain. The space also relies on a blend of historical items with multimedia elements. It gains even more value by featuring many elements focused on the 1992 Olympics, held in the city. The attraction is located next to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, which was the main venue of the 92 edition.

Another European country that has its own Olympic museum is Germany. This is the German Sports and Olympic Museum, located in Cologne. In addition to telling the story of German sport, the space features attractions where it is possible to try out some of the main Olympic sports in a simple way, such as boxing, cycling, and weightlifting.

Poland also has its own sports museum, the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw. The space also has permanent exhibitions tracing the history of Polish sport from the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. What is impressive is the number of pieces, which exceeds 46,000. In addition to historical items, the space also features books, photos, newspapers, and Olympic memorabilia.

FIFA Museum in Zurich

FIFA is the governing body of football and also has its own museum, a great option for fans of the world’s most popular sport. It is located in Zurich, Switzerland, the same city as the organisation’s headquarters. There are more than 3,000 square metres dedicated to the magic of football as a whole, blending physical elements with subjective works that evoke feelings in fans. The main highlight is naturally the elements relating to the history of the World Cups, the sport’s greatest tournament and one that stirs the emotions of everyone who cares about football.

It is worth noting that FIFA has other museums spread around the world, in Hong Kong, Vancouver, and Miami. For those who want to have experiences without leaving home, the institution also offers digital exhibitions that can be accessed through the FIFA Museum website.

The FIFA Museum’s collection can also provide useful context for understanding the history, competitions and statistics of football. These same elements may appear in football betting coverage, including markets such as corners, cards and shots on target, but they remain separate from the museum experience itself.

Other museums worth visiting

In addition to the major sports museums, there are others that cover more specific areas, such as the history of football clubs. If you are in any of these cities, it is worth adding them to your itinerary:

  • National Football Museum, in Manchester, England, featuring historical pieces from world football.
  • Museo del Calcio, in Florence, Italy, focused on the history of Italian football.
  • Legends Museum, in Madrid, Spain, focused on great players in football history.
  • The German Football Museum, in Dortmund, focused on the history of the national team.
