Sailing Solo: The Ultimate Guide to Cruising Alone

Posted on August 8, 2024 By Becky

Cruising is probably the most exciting way to travel the world (you’ll probably know that I feel this way from a few other posts I’ve written recently!), but having travelled on a cruise with pals, would I ever consider singles cruises? You bet I would!

Doing it on your own takes that sense of adventure and self-discovery up a notch, and it’s so worth taking a solo holiday to unwind and recharge, and if you’re alone then so be it! If you’re planning on cruising by yourself, you’re in for an enriching and liberating time, and having spent time on a cruise I know that there are loads of things for being travelling by themselves to do on board.

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re thinking of embarking on your first solo cruise…

Why Choose a Solo Cruise?

Singles cruises offer unique advantages:

Freedom and flexibility: You are in control of your schedule, and don’t have to compromise with anyone else over what to do and when. Want to pass on the continental breakfast to hit the hotel restaurant for late brunch or lie by the pool all day? You’re the boss!

Self-Discovery: The responsibility of solo travelling is great for self-confidence, and you get a chance to meet new people, try new activities, and soak in new cultures.

Ease of Planning: The cruise is the ultimate all-features package. You don’t have to worry about booking accommodation or restaurants – or even the entertainment. This is all planned for you, so it’s easier to sit back and relax.

Tips for Successful Singles Cruises

1. Choose the Right Cabin

Inside cabins are cheaper, but a balcony room can give you your own haven for relaxing while taking in the scenery. Think carefully about what you value most for both comfort and price.

2. Engage in Onboard Activities

There’s never a dull moment on a cruise, as you’ll never run out of things to do: cooking demos, dance lessons, trivia quizzes, movies, about-the-destinations lectures and live shows are just a few of your options. Go to them all to meet other guests and make new friends.

3. Join Shore Excursions

Group excursions are a great way to learn about a destination and to meet other passengers. Choose excursions that appeal to you and make small talk.

4. Dine Socially

Some cruise lines have dining tables for solo passengers where you can eat your meals and meet new people; others offer flexi-dining options at set meal times, where you can eat alone or with others.

5. Use Social Media and Cruise Forums

Before you leave, join message boards or social media groups linked to your cruise; there are many for different cruise lines (we found a Facebook group for our specific ship before our last cruise!). This way you can meet other solo travellers, even to catch up onboard.

Making the Most of Your Solo Time

1. Relax and Recharge

One of the major perks of travelling alone is that you have time to completely unwind how you want: hit the spa, lie by the pool, or curl up and read back at your hotel room.

2. Explore Your Interests

Use this time to get involved with whatever you’re into doing – your passion – be it photography, writing, hobbies or learning a new skill. The beauty of travelling solo is you can do what you want, when you want.

3. Embrace the Local Culture

Make as much use of the many port calls as you can, try the local cuisine, visit monuments and museums, meet and talk to some of the locals.

Safety Tips for Solo Cruisers

Stay Connected: Keep in touch with family or friends and share your itinerary.

Take Notice: Peer over the port rail and pay attention to your surroundings.

Be Cautious: Trust your instincts. Oceans are vast and often dangerous. While this advice might not be news to anyone, as a solo traveller you need to be especially conscientious.

Protect your valuables: Store valuables in the cabin safe and take extra care with handbags and laptop bags in public areas.

Thinking of singles cruises? I’m jealous!

By travelling solo, you will not only see the world, but do so in a way that offers optimal relaxation and personal development. As long as you take some simple precautions and an open mind, you will have an amazing experience and, who knows, maybe even make a few lifelong friends.

Grab your bags, get on board, and enjoy your cruise!
