Refresh Your Home’s Exterior

Posted on June 18, 2025March 2, 2026 By Becky

Your home’s exterior might not be something you think about often because chances are you spend a lot more time looking at the decor inside than you do the walls or concrete outside, but you know what? Your home’s exterior really does matter, not just for your pleasure when you are in the garden, or when you come home from work and you can see a pristine house as you enter, but because curb appeal is great for your home’s value, and your neighbours’ impressions of you, too.

So if your house is starting to look a bit tired, here’s how to freshen it up without turning into a full-time property developer or spending your life in DIY stores.

Start With a Good Scrub (The House Version)

Let’s be honest. If your brickwork looks more grey than red, and your driveway has developed a film of mystery slime, it’s probably time to bring in the big guns. We’re talking power washing.

Power washing services are a brilliantly satisfying way to blast away years of built-up dirt, moss, and weather-stains. It’s like giving your house a facial, only louder and wetter. Driveways, walls, patios, decking—nothing escapes the mighty stream of high-pressure water.

You could do it yourself, of course, but unless you enjoy lugging around hefty equipment and soaking yourself repeatedly, it might be easier to get the pros in. They’re quicker, more thorough, and far less likely to accidentally take a chunk out of your garden furniture.

Paint It Like You Mean It

Once you’ve stripped away the grime, take a good look at your paintwork. If your front door is faded, your window frames are chipped, or your fences look like they’ve survived a zombie apocalypse, it’s time for a fresh coat.

Choose weatherproof, exterior-grade paint in a colour that complements your home. Classic black, heritage green, or a cheerful pop of red can all work wonders. And yes, that means ditching the faded beige that has clung to your shed since 2006.

Tidy Up the Details

It’s amazing how much difference the small things make. Swap rusty house numbers for shiny new ones. Replace the cracked doorbell. Clean the outside of your windows so the whole place doesn’t look like it’s been abandoned.

Add a planter or two if you’re feeling fancy. No one’s asking you to recreate the Chelsea Flower Show, but a couple of low-maintenance pots by the door say, “This house is looked after,” instead of “Send help.”

Don’t Forget the Roof (Yes, Really)

Most people never look up, but you should. A roof covered in moss or missing tiles does not exactly scream “well-maintained.” While you’re at it, clear out the gutters. Blocked gutters lead to water damage, and nothing ruins curb appeal like a soggy wall.

Cast an Eye Over Your Driveway

Your driveway might not feel like a part of your house, as such, but it is another external element that’s well worth your attention. After all, having a cracked, weed-infested driveway right next to your sparkling new exteriors will feel like living next door to a terrible neighbour. And, your actual neighbours probably won’t appreciate the eyesore.

Luckily, you can often address driveway issues with a simple weeding session or a few patched cracks, but you may want to contact a paving company if things have gotten any more out of control than that. Repairs and replacements could end your current driveway despair and will certainly ensure that this one forgotten element doesn’t drive away with your exterior efforts elsewhere.

Be the House on the Street Everyone Points at (In a Good Way)

Refreshing your home’s exterior doesn’t have to mean scaffolding and scaffolding-sized bills. A bit of cleaning, a splash of paint, and some thoughtful details can transform it from “just another house” into the one people actually admire.

And honestly, few things are more satisfying than seeing your own driveway sparkle like it’s just had a spa day. Especially when someone else did the power washing.
