Pyjamas, Skincare and Small Evening Rituals That Actually Help You Wind Down

Posted on June 2, 2026 By Becky

There is a version of the evening that looks very calm and intentional. A tidy kitchen, a face cleanser that smells like something expensive, soft lighting, and a genuinely relaxing hour before bed. And then there is the version that actually happens, which involves being on your phone until your eyes feel gritty, forgetting to take your makeup off until the last possible moment, and falling asleep mid-thought in clothes you probably should have changed out of hours ago.

Most of us are somewhere in between, and honestly, getting even partway toward the calmer version makes a noticeable difference to how the next morning feels. The trick is keeping it small and realistic enough to actually stick to.

Start With Getting Changed

This sounds almost too simple to mention, but changing out of the clothes you have worn all day is one of the most effective signals you can give your brain that the working part of the day is done. It creates a small but genuine psychological break, particularly if you work from home and your days lack obvious transitions.

What you change into matters more than most people think. Rough or uncomfortable fabric, waistbands that dig in, anything that fits awkwardly when you sit or lie down — it all creates low-level physical irritation that interrupts rest without you necessarily realising that is what is happening. Cool-Jams make nightgowns specifically designed around temperature regulation and comfort, which is worth knowing about if you tend to overheat overnight or find yourself waking up at odd hours feeling too warm.

The goal is fabric that you stop noticing within about thirty seconds of putting it on. When you find that, it makes a genuine difference.

A Skincare Routine Does Not Have to Be Long

There is a version of evening skincare that involves twelve steps and takes half an hour, and a version that takes three minutes and still does most of the important things. The three-minute version is the one most people will actually do consistently, and consistency is what makes it useful.

The basics are genuinely basic. Remove your makeup properly, cleanse, and put something hydrating on your face. That is it. Everything else is optional and can be added in gradually if you enjoy it. A light facial oil or a good moisturiser, applied while your skin is still slightly damp, gives you most of the benefit without the production.

The ritual part of this is what actually helps with winding down. Running warm water over your face, the smell of whatever products you use, the act of standing quietly at the sink for a few minutes without looking at a screen. It sounds small because it is small, but the body responds to these repeated cues over time.

Warmth Before Bed Works

A warm shower or bath in the hour or two before you want to sleep is one of the most consistently effective wind-down tools there is. The mechanism is slightly counterintuitive: the warm water raises your surface temperature, and when you cool down afterwards, your core temperature drops, which signals to your body that it is time to sleep.

You do not need it to be a long soak. Even ten minutes in a warm shower followed by getting into comfortable, loose clothing and a cool-ish bedroom can meaningfully shorten the time it takes to actually fall asleep. If you have been lying in bed for twenty minutes willing yourself to drift off, this is often the missing piece.

A few drops of lavender oil in the bath or on your pillow is worth trying if you find it relaxing. The evidence on aromatherapy is not conclusive but the anecdotal case is strong, and if it helps you slow down, that is enough of a reason.

Put the Phone Down Earlier Than You Think You Need To

This is the one most people know they should be doing and find the hardest to actually implement. The issue is not just the blue light, though that does interfere with melatonin production. It is the constant low-level stimulation of scrolling, which keeps the brain in a state of alert engagement at exactly the moment you need it to start switching off.

Setting a phone-down time that is thirty minutes before you want to sleep is the minimum. An hour is better. Filling that gap with something that requires light concentration but no urgency, reading a novel, doing a crossword, listening to a podcast you find genuinely calming, gives your brain something to do while it gradually comes down from the pace of the day.

If you cannot manage a full hour, even fifteen consistent minutes of no screens before you close your eyes tends to have an impact.

The Small Things Add Up

Healthline, drawing on guidance from sleep specialists, notes that consistent evening rituals signal to the brain and body that it is time to shift gears, building associations over time between specific actions and the state of being ready to sleep. The routine does not need to be elaborate. It needs to be repeated.

A change of clothes, a clean face, a warm shower, and a bit of quiet before bed. Done consistently, that small sequence starts to do more work than it looks like it should. Your body learns what is coming next and begins preparing for it before you have even turned the light off.

That is about as good as evenings get, and it turns out that is quite good enough.
