Prevent Bathroom Mould Forever In 3 Easy Steps

Who hates bathroom mould? All of your hands should collectively go up; it’s one of the worst things to experience. Not only is it potentially harmful to your health, but it also makes your bathroom look terrible. It’s so disheartening to see nasty black mould between the tiles or around the sealant on your shower screen. Worst of all, removing mould is a gigantic pain – and it doesn’t always go away. 

Luckily, preventing mould is far easier. In just three simple steps, you will avoid seeing any mould in your bathroom ever again. 

1. Make sure you use an efficient extractor fan

You need an extractor fan in your bathroom. All bathrooms should be built with one, but if yours weirdly isn’t, you should buy and install a bathroom extractor fan right away. It works by sucking up the moisture from the room, preventing it from getting too humid – which is how mould spawns. 

Make sure your current extractor fan still works efficiently. If it’s clogged with dust, you’ll need to either clean it or replace it with a newer model. Turn it on whenever you use the shower, and keep it on for a good 30 minutes after. 

2. Open the windows 

If your bathroom has windows, open them! 

This improves airflow in the room and gives the steamy air somewhere to go. Some of it gets sucked up by your fan, while the rest can flow out through the windows. Again, it helps reduce the humidity levels and stops mould from growing. Keep your windows open for as long as possible throughout the day, especially after someone has used the shower or had a steamy bath. 

What if your bathroom doesn’t have windows? This is common in apartments, and the solution is to buy a dehumidifier. It’s not as good as having windows, but this device will extract moisture from the air to maintain the right humidity levels. 

3. Wipe down surfaces after every use

Get into the habit of wiping down surfaces after using your bathroom. You have a shower, so get a soft microfibre cloth and wipe the tiles around the shower/bath. This will remove moisture from the surfaces, stopping mould from settling in and growing. 

It’s also the most neglected part of bathroom maintenance. People don’t bother wiping down their shower/bath, so it’s not surprising to see so much mould everywhere. When combined with the two previous tips, this will make sure you never see mould in your bathroom ever again. 

Bonus: Consider different tiling options

The three tips above will work for everyone and every bathroom. However, if you’re planning a bathroom renovation and want to stop mould from the word go, then think about different wall solutions instead of traditional tiles. 

Normal tiles are prone to mould because it grows in the grout. If you opt for groutless tiles or panels, there are no gaps for the mould to stick and grow. These solutions are also a lot easier for you to wipe down – but it’s not as big of a deal if you forget from time to time. 

To summarise, preventing bathroom mould is all about stopping the ideal mould conditions from happening. This involves a lot of removing humidity and moisture from the room – which can be done in three easy steps. Get some new tiles if you want, but think of that as a little bonus idea!
