Getting three generations under one roof for a week sounds lovely in theory. Actually doing it means finding a place big enough for everyone, checking that Grandad won’t have to wrestle a spiral staircase just to reach the front door, and somehow keeping a toddler occupied while the teenagers scroll their phones and pretend they’d rather be literally anywhere else.

Start With the Accommodation, Not the Destination

Most families choose a destination first and then panic-search for a property that’ll actually fit everyone. Try it the other way around. When grandparents, parents and kids are all travelling together, where you stay matters far more than the town you’re in. You’ll want enough bedrooms so nobody ends up on a sofa bed, a bathroom on the ground floor for anyone with dodgy knees, and a communal living space where the whole group can sit down together without someone perching on an armrest.

Pick Activities That Don’t Need Everyone Together

One thing that’ll make or break a multigenerational trip is whether people feel free to split up during the day. Nobody needs to do everything together all the time. Grandparents might want a quiet morning with a book and a cup of tea while the parents take the little ones crabbing. Teenagers will almost certainly want to explore the town by themselves after lunch, and that’s fine.

Pick a base near a village or small town so there’s enough going on within a short walk or drive to keep different age groups happy. A harbour, a couple of cafes, a coastal path and a good chippy will cover most of what people actually want on holiday. You don’t need a packed itinerary with something booked for every hour. You just need options close by.

Nobody remembers a holiday for the itinerary. They remember the big dinner that happened because everyone drifted back to the house at the same time, the grandparents getting proper rest without feeling left out, and the kids collecting enough shells and stories to talk about the whole drive home.
