Paver Installation Done Right: Base Preparation, Jointing, and Sealing for Long-Term Durability

Introduction

A properly installed paver surface can hold up for decades with minimal intervention. When you rush or skip the foundational steps, the surface shifts, cracks, and deteriorates far sooner than it should. Three phases determine the long-term outcome: base preparation, jointing, and sealing. Each one feeds directly into the next, and a weak link anywhere in the chain shows up eventually underfoot. 

Knowing what each stage involves helps property owners ask better questions and make smarter decisions before work begins.

Why Base Preparation Is the Foundation

Most people do not realize until too late that the top material is only as good as what is beneath it. Contractors offering professional paver installation services treat base depth and compaction rates as non-negotiable variables, because both directly affect how the surface responds to load and temperature changes over time. 

The ground must bear weight, stay stable through seasonal shifts, and move water away efficiently. A surprising number of premature failures trace back to base work that looked fine on the surface but simply lacked the density it needed.

Excavation Depth Matters

Most installations call for removing 6 to 12 inches of soil, with depth varying based on use. Pedestrian areas need considerably less than driveways bearing vehicle weight. The excavated area should also slope slightly to guide drainage away from any nearby structure.

Compacted Aggregate Base

Crushed aggregate, typically 4 to 6 inches deep, forms the structural core of the installation. Compaction happens in lifts, with each layer fully settled before the next goes down. Any loose or uneven spots in the aggregate will eventually work their way up through the finished surface.

Bedding Sand Layer

A single inch of coarse sand, carefully screeded across the compacted base, gives installers room for fine adjustments during placement. It also helps hold pavers in position once the joints are filled. Washed or fine-grain sand should be avoided here, as both tend to shift under pressure over time.

Paver Placement and Pattern

With the base ready, pavers go down in the selected pattern. Running bond, herringbone, and basket weave are all popular choices. For driveways, the 45-degree herringbone variation tends to be preferred because it spreads load more evenly across the interlocking grid.

Each paver is set by hand and tapped into the bedding sand with a rubber mallet. Forcing pieces together damages edges and throws off alignment. Edge restraints along every open border matter a great deal here; without them, outer rows gradually creep outward and the entire pattern begins to loosen from the sides in.

Jointing: Locking the Surface Together

Joint sand is what turns a field of individual pavers into a unified, stable surface. Polymeric sand has become the go-to choice for both residential and commercial projects, and for good reason.

How Polymeric Sand Works

Polymeric sand contains a binding agent that activates on contact with water. Once cured, the joints resist washout during heavy rain, slow weed growth, and discourage insects from tunneling beneath the surface. Plain sand, by comparison, washes out with the first real downpour and needs topping up repeatedly through the season.

Application Method

Sand gets swept across the surface in several passes until joints are filled to within one-eighth of an inch from the top. All excess material must be cleared with a leaf blower before any misting begins. Sand left sitting on paver faces during activation bonds right to the surface and leaves behind a haze that takes real effort to remove.

Sealing for Surface Protection

Sealing is the final step, and it does more than most people expect. A good sealant prevents oil from penetrating surfaces, slows UV fading, and makes spills far easier to clean before they stain. Color-wise, many sealants bring out a richer tone in natural stone and tumbled pavers that is hard to achieve any other way.

New pavers need a minimum of 90 days before sealing, giving efflorescence, the natural salt bloom that rises to the surface early on, enough time to clear. The surface must be clean and completely dry before any product goes down. A typical sealant holds up well for 3 to 5 years before reapplication becomes necessary.
