Reviewing the Origins of the Dutch Draft Horse Breed

The domesticated Dutch draft horse has been around since after World War One. It is safe to say the origins of the breed go back many hundreds of years, as far as the horse rug itself. The beginnings of horses used in agriculture probably go back as far, but soon, machinery took over and horses found other uses, including transport, leisure and recreational.

There were four main breeds of Dutch draft horse, and they were all bred for different purposes. The common element of these four is their good-naturedness.  After the Dutch horse which was used primarily in agriculture, there are the Gelders type and the Groningen, which are mainly used for leisure. Finally, you have the Freisian aka the “black pearl”.

The agricultural origins of the Dutch draft horse were down to its stout frame, large head, strong profile and short, stout ears. Used in the mining industry as well this breed has its origins in horses from the Middle Ages, probably from various countries in Northwestern Europe.

Around the 1950’s the agricultural demand had lessened, and the Dutch draft horse became a rider’s horse. The Dutch government intervened in the breeding process at this time, bringing about the modern-day Dutch horse breed. It is the weightiest breed and measure some 5 foot 3 inches from hoof to back. Even larger and well-known for its use in agriculture is the Shire at some 6 feet 4inches.

The Dutch draft horse is considered one of the largest themselves and their short legs make them ideal for pulling loads attached to wagons. Their colour is variable, with some being chestnut, others reddish-brown or grey, but there are some which are black.

Its neck is short and muscular, while their back and legs provide ample power to get the job done. The Dutch draft horse is heavier than the average draft horse. They offer a quiet demeanour but are able to pick up pace, if necessary, with a lively stride. Ideal around mixed gardens or sandy areas.

The Dutch draft needs pastures to feed on to maintain its well-being. Foodstuffs such as legumes, preserved hay and other forage-rich foods will be ideal, to keep them healthy. Forage substitutes like hay cubes, hay-based pellets or beet pulp help the process along as they are rich in fibre.

An issue is the amount of water that a Dutch draft horse will need. If your horse is eating large amounts of dry feed, then they will need more water. With considerable physical activity you can pretty much rely on an average horse to drink 21 litres of water per day, with clean, accessible water a preference.

The two types of Dutch horse make them ideal for recreation and education. The first, warmblood is sportier and probably likes to have plenty of land to roam around on. This breed is also sometimes used for jumping in competitions.  The second, the coldblood is calmer and easy-going and likes to be undisturbed. They can also be a bit stubborn. It’s a sensitive horse that is not so easily surprised.

Consider the Dutch draft horse, with its long history, good-naturedness, and a likeable personality. It will be a wonderful addition to your stable.
