Navigating the Rising Cost of Living in 2025: A Personal Take

Posted on February 20, 2025 By Becky

On the blog today I’m going to take a look at a significant issue which seems to be impacting everyone at the moment, which is the increasing cost of living here in the UK. The cost of food shopping, along with energy bills, rent or mortgage payments, plus daily living expenses, has significantly increased compared to past times.

A MoneyPlus Advice article “The Expense of Living in 2025” recently stood out to me, because it reflected some of my personal experiences. The article examines financial struggles, while providing valuable tips for better expense management (something that I think we can all agree that we need!). The article made me reflect on my personal experiences and the minor adjustments I’ve made to enhance my financial situation.

So, let’s break it down: Let’s examine current events and their causes, and take a look at ways of tackling them:

Everything is More Expensive—But Why?

You’re not wrong when you realise your money doesn’t go as far as before. In the article it reveals that rising costs are affecting more than 90% of people which makes perfect sense. Rising prices result from the combined effects of inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions along with global events.

The sharp increase in food prices emerged as the most striking example from the article. I have personally observed that grocery shopping now requires much more careful budget planning. The price for a loaf of bread I paid at £1.20 last year has increased to nearly £2 and don’t even talk to me about eggs – the price of a dozen in my Tesco order is now nearly double the cost!

Housing Costs: Rent and Mortgages Are Sky-High

Many people consider housing to be their top concern at this moment. The expense of maintaining a home through either renting or mortgage payments has increased significantly.

The article points out the widespread struggle people face with housing costs which I can fully relate to. We considered moving to a larger house a few years back, but increased moving costs and mortgage rates made us choose to improve our existing space instead with an extension and kitchen upgrade. Throw in some new paintwork and innovative storage systems, and even though we had to splash some cash, it was still cheaper than moving to a bigger property in our area (South East London).

The following tips can help you reduce your housing expenses if you’re aiming to save money on your home:

– Renting out an available room in your home helps you to cover your mortgage or rent expenses.

– Negotiating your rent seems unlikely but landlords prefer retaining a reliable tenant because finding a new one involves more effort. It’s always worth asking!

– You can save money over time through small energy-efficient home improvements which I will discuss shortly.

Energy Bills: The Silent Budget Killer

Energy bills represent another area where costs have dramatically increased. The MoneyPlus article shows that energy prices have created significant financial pressure.

Previously I loved to maintain a warm home during winter, while now I carefully monitor the use of our heating system. These minor adjustments have successfully reduced my energy usage:

– I use a heated blanket to stay warm instead of heating the entire house.
– Switching to energy-saving LED bulbs
– Unplugging electronics when they’re not in use (kids, I’m looking at you here!)
– Washing clothes at lower temperatures

These small adjustments appear insignificant yet result in substantial savings over time.

Grocery Shopping: A Strategic Game Now

Food shopping has become an area where expenses continue to rise rapidly. The article underscores how crucial it is to create budgets and seek out deals which I now follow with dedication.

Here are budget-friendly grocery shopping techniques that I have successfully put into practice:

– Meal planning allows me to avoid purchasing unnecessary items and helps decrease food waste.
– Purchasing rice, pasta, and canned foods in large amounts results in significant cost savings.
– Local markets offer fresh produce that comes at lower prices and superior flavours. from local markets compared to supermarkets.
– Supermarket loyalty programs do not totally transform savings, but every small discount adds value.

I also recommend trying out budget-friendly recipes. Online resources offer numerous delicious recipes that combine inexpensive ingredients with nutritional benefits.

Personal Finance: Taking Back Control

As prices continue to rise budgeting has become crucial for managing money effectively. The article advises readers to create a detailed budget and follow it, which stands as excellent guidance.

Since I started using a budgeting app, my financial management has improved dramatically. This tool reveals my spending patterns and enables me to eliminate unnecessary purchases.

My monthly spending tracking revealed I was paying exorbitant amounts for takeaway coffee (yikes!). I haven’t completely eliminated it from my life because life is too short for that! My coffee consumption has decreased to a point where I now enjoy it as a weekend treat instead of a daily routine.

Community Support: We’re All in This Together

The article’s focus on community stands out as one of its strongest points. The increasing expenses affect everyone, and working together often become the most effective strategy to save money.

I have started sharing food with both friends and neighbours recently – our road What’s App group is alive with donations of both food, as well as unwanted household goods and furniture.

Another fun idea? Clothes swaps! Why not opt for clothing swaps with friends instead of buying new outfits? This activity proves to be both environmentally friendly and affordable while providing an excellent reason to host an event.

Living expenses continue to climb, which creates frustration, yet we retain our power to overcome these challenges. We can successfully face these challenging times through wise financial decisions that focus on our expenditures together with mutual support.

The most effective approach requires proactive steps instead of reactive panic. We can successfully navigate through difficult times by adopting the proper mindset and good habits.

I welcome any money-saving strategies you plan to use in 2025. Drop them in the comments below!
