Money Isn’t Just Bills: 7 Ways It Can Actually Be Fun

Posted on February 5, 2026 By Becky

Money can be stressful, from bills to retirement planning. Financial pressure can feel heavy sometimes. But it’s time to challenge the view that money only adds stress to life. Money can also be a way to have more fun and make you smile more. Here are seven ways money is more than just bills:

1. Treat Yourself, Without Guilt

You don’t have to feel guilty about buying yourself something that you don’t really need. You deserve it for many reasons, including how hard you work at your job. Think of buying yourself something you like as a reward. It could be a cup of special coffee in the morning, or going to a concert of a singer you’ve always wanted to see perform live.

Maybe you’ll finally book that solo trip you’ve been thinking about going on for a while now, but couldn’t justify spending the money on. Now you can, believing that you are worth it. You’ve planned what you want and are spending the funds intentionally, whether that’s on coffee, a concert, a solo getaway, or something else important to you. Planning the purchase takes away any guilt because you’ve planned the treat in advance. There’s no stress because you give yourself permission to buy the thing, and that’s comforting.

2. Turn Money Into Experiences

Rather than spending money on a material item, you might choose an experience. There are many benefits to doing so. You’ll get out of the house, see more of the city, head further abroad, or do something else out of the ordinary. That’s exciting. It’s an adventure that could give you more happiness than possessions.

Which ones you spend money on depends on what you like to do the most. It could be travel, a class, an event, or a hobby. You might go to the art gallery or sign up for an art class. When you use money this way, you’re creating memories, not adding more stuff to your house. You’ll have great memories of the experiences, too.

3. Gamification of Money

Applying a game-like approach to money can make it more fun to save. You’ll also feel a mental rush when you see small rewards like a few extra dollars in the bank account each week. It’s fun when you use a budgeting app well, too. As on a scoreboard, the app shows categories, and you need to stay within your monthly budget to “win.”

You might challenge yourself to save for a set number of weeks, increasing the weekly amount each week, and set a final goal to achieve. Or you could create a travel jar, putting change into it during the week as you save up for the trip. Each time you add to the jar, look at it as being another dollar closer to having enough money set aside to cover the trip’s expenses. It’s not a sacrifice; instead, it’s a win.

4. Online Entertainment

Money is fun for some people when it adds excitement and entertainment. Playing online games using real money is a leisure activity, not a financial strategy. You’re paying for the experience, the thrill, much like you would for a concert or movie ticket. Not all sites are trustworthy, though, and choosing the right one makes a big difference to how enjoyable it is.

High-quality platforms tend to offer fast cash-outs, work well on smartphones and tablets, and have a range of games. The best ones often include welcome offers and are personalised for locals. This curated list makes it easier to find the best online casino in New Zealand. That way, players can focus on enjoying the experience, rather than worrying about reliability.

5. Make Money in Surprising Ways

When you actually like the work you do to make money, finances become more enjoyable. Many people are starting to spend the time they have free from their day job making money at activities that were once only hobbies. Crafts, for example, are popular online, with many shoppers looking for unique, handmade items such as knitted hats.

There’s a great payoff in addition to a higher income when you earn money in these unexpected ways. You come to realise that your skill is valuable when others pay money for what you create, which helps you feel more confident.

6. Giving Money Away (Yes, Really)

At first, you may think, “What? Why would I do that?” Let me explain. There is a joy that comes with giving. When you see a loved one wearing or using something that you bought for them, it feels great. Your generosity makes them feel good, which makes you feel good too.

You might also donate to charities that are important to you. Perhaps you give an extra-large tip the next time you’re at a restaurant. Or, maybe you help someone out who could use some extra money this month. That can feel more special than spending the funds on yourself.

7. Buy Yourself Some Free Time

A satisfying way to use money is to buy you time and freedom. What does that mean? It refers to making life easier. You might spend money on convenience, for instance. That could mean ordering in food on busy nights, so you don’t have to worry about what to make for the family for dinner. Or, paying for express shipping for items you need by a certain date when time matters more than savings.

Also, consider hiring an expert to do tasks that take up a lot of your time, such as cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. When you pay someone else to handle these activities, you free up your day and have less stress. That can make buying yourself some free time a good thing.

Concluding Words

When you think about money, consider it as being several things rather than just one. It can be stressful, yes, but it can also be fun. There are many ways money can bring more happiness into your day, as the list above so clearly shows.
