Managing Your Finances While Working Remotely Abroad Posted on June 24, 2025 By Becky The wise of remote work following the sea change on employment brought on by the pandemic has unlocked a world of flexibility. For UK freelancers, the ability to work from anywhere whenever they want or are able is more appealing than ever, even with widespread calls from many that people should be returning to the office now the threat of COVID is largely behind us. But while hopping between co-working spaces in Lisbon or Bali might sound liberating (and even exciting), managing your finances as a freelancer abroad can quickly become a minefield without the right systems in place. Start with Tax: Know Where You Stand Before you book your flight, figure out your tax residency. Just because you’re living abroad doesn’t mean you’ve left the UK tax system. If HMRC still considers you a UK resident, you’re liable for UK tax on your worldwide income. The rules can get complicated fast, especially if you split time across countries or have clients in multiple jurisdictions. Freelancers often get tripped up by vague rules around the Statutory Residence Test or fail to report foreign income properly. HMRC expects accuracy, and penalties for misreporting can be steep. If in doubt, seek professional advice and keep detailed records. Understanding your residency status is step one in staying compliant and stress-free. Banking That Works Wherever You Work A standard UK bank account won’t cut it if you’re juggling payments in euros, dollars, or baht. Freelancers working abroad need banking solutions that support multi-currency accounts and offer seamless international transfers. Look for services with transparent fees, real-time exchange rates, and a reliable app or platform. Ease of access and strong customer service (regardless of your time zone) also matter. Managing cash flow while travelling is hard enough. The right banking setup ensures your funds stay accessible, and you’re not losing money to poor conversion rates or hidden fees. Get Paid Without the Penalty When working with overseas clients, you’ll want to invoice clearly in the client’s local currency or agree upfront on the payment method and currency. This avoids disputes and delays. But the real trick is how you receive the funds. Traditional bank transfers can be expensive and slow. Instead, using international money transfer services helps you reduce transaction fees, get better exchange rates, and speed up the payment process. These tools are built for freelancers dealing with cross-border clients and offer far more flexibility and transparency than banks. Respect the Rules Abroad Even if you’re self-employed, many countries don’t allow you to work on a tourist visa. Check visa requirements and work permit rules before setting up shop in a new country. Some places are freelancer-friendly with digital nomad visas, while others come down hard on unregistered workers. Understand local tax laws too because some countries may require you to register if you stay too long, even if your clients are all abroad. Don’t assume that because you’re remote, you’re exempt. Think Long-Term Don’t let the lifestyle distract from your future. Continue contributing to your pension or consider investing in private pension schemes tailored for expats. Monitor how currency fluctuations might affect your savings over time too because what looks like a solid nest egg in pounds today could shrink if exchange rates shift. Above all else, however, always think in the long term.
