Making Your Kids’ Screen Time Count

Posted on May 8, 2025May 9, 2025 By Becky

Most parents start out with lofty ideas about screen time and how they will not let their kids have any at all, but life happens, things change, and most kids will be allowed to have at least a little time staring at a device as they get older. If that sounds all too familiar, instead of sweating the fact that they have any screen time at all, wouldn’t it be better to really make that screen time count? To ensure that the time your kids spend on devices is time well spent? Here are a few things that will help you with that.

Curate Quality Content, Not Just Quantity

You wouldn’t let your child eat nothing but crisps all day, so don’t settle for mind-numbing videos. Seek out educational channels that spark curiosity. Whether it’s a science explainer about volcanoes, a history documentary on ancient Egypt, or a language-learning clip teaching basic French phrases, there is a wealth of free, high-quality content online. Bookmark a handful of reliable sources, then create a simple playlist or folder. Suddenly, YouTube becomes a treasure trove of facts, rather than a rabbit hole of cute cats.

Incorporate “Games” with a Purpose

Digital games often get a bad rap for promoting couch potato syndrome, yet they can hone skills like pattern recognition, strategic thinking and hand-eye coordination. Opt for titles that require problem solving or creativity, such as coding adventures, puzzle quests or art-creation apps. Challenge your child to explain their strategy after each session, encouraging reflection and verbal skills. You’ll find that those triumphant “I solved it” moments do more for their confidence than any static worksheet.

Set Screen Goals Together

Explain to your children that, just like football practice, crafting classes or dance lessons, screen time can have objectives. Sit down as a family and agree on two or three goals—for example, mastering ten new words in Spanish on a language app, completing a certain science module, or creating a short stop-motion animation. Write these targets on the fridge and award small rewards for meeting them, such as choosing the family board game on a rainy day. This approach gives purpose to each session, ensuring that screen hours are both fun and fruitful.
