How to Make One Bunch of Flowers Fill the Whole House Posted on October 5, 2026 By Becky Fresh flowers make a house feel like a home, but with a busy family and a food shop that seems to get bigger every week, buying bunch after bunch isn’t always realistic. The good news is that with a little creativity, a single bunch can be spread around the house so that every room gets a bit of colour. It’s worth thinking about how many flowers actually come into most homes. Birthdays, Mother’s Day, the odd thank you from a friend: for lots of families, the majority of blooms that come through the front door are flower gifts rather than flowers they’ve bought themselves. And the usual instinct is to plonk the whole lot into one big vase on the kitchen table and leave them there until they droop. Splitting them up instead makes them go so much further, and it’s surprisingly fun to do. Sort the stems first Before doing anything else, lay everything out on a tea towel and have a proper look at what’s there. Most mixed bunches contain three types of stem, even if it’s not obvious at first glance. There are the showy ones, like roses, peonies, dahlias or big open lilies. Then there are the fillers, the smaller flowers and sprays that bulk things out. And finally there’s the foliage, which is easy to overlook but honestly does half the work. Eucalyptus, ruscus and pittosporum all look gorgeous on their own in a slim bottle. Once everything is laid out separately, it’s much easier to imagine where each bit might live. Give them a good drink This is the boring bit, but it makes a huge difference. Snip a couple of centimetres off each stem at an angle with sharp scissors, strip off any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and get them into clean, cool water as quickly as possible. Leaves left in the water go slimy and cloudy surprisingly fast, and that’s usually what makes flowers give up early. Changing the water every couple of days and giving the stems a little trim at the same time only takes two minutes, and it can keep a bunch looking good for well over a week. Raid the cupboards for vases There’s no need for a shelf full of expensive vases. Some of the loveliest little arrangements live in things most homes already have. Jam jars are brilliant, especially the chunky ones. Old glass bottles look beautiful with a single stem. Teacups, milk jugs, empty candle jars and even a wonky mug from a children’s pottery painting session all work a treat, and the more personal the vessel, the more charming the result. Grouping three or four small vessels together on a windowsill looks far more styled than one big vase, and it’s an easy way to make a modest bunch go further. Room by room Here’s one way to split things up. The kitchen gets the biggest arrangement, because it’s where most families spend the bulk of their time. Keep the showiest blooms together in a medium jug, with some foliage to give it shape. The bathroom gets one or two stems in a bud vase. It sounds silly, but a single flower next to the sink makes the whole room feel calmer, even with a damp towel on the floor and toothpaste in the plughole. The bedside table gets something small and scented, if there’s anything scented in the bunch. Waking up to a sweet pea or a stem of stock is a lovely little treat. The hallway gets foliage. It’s often the darkest part of the house and greenery copes with that better than delicate petals do. It’s also the first thing anyone sees when they walk in. And children can be given a stem each for their own rooms. They tend to take the job of choosing incredibly seriously. Give them a second life When the flowers start to fade, there’s no need to throw everything out at once. Pull out anything past its best, trim the rest shorter, and move them into smaller jars. A slightly tired rose cut down to sit low in a teacup still looks pretty for another few days. After that, pressing a few petals is a lovely craft activity for children of all ages. Pressed flowers can be turned into bookmarks, cards or a little framed picture for a grandparent. All that’s needed is some greaseproof paper and the heaviest books in the house. Leave them for a couple of weeks and there’ll be something lovely to work with. Hydrangeas and some of the sturdier grasses also dry beautifully if hung upside down somewhere warm and out of the way. A little bunch of dried hydrangea on a landing can last for months. Little and often Flowers don’t need to be a big, grand display to bring a bit of joy. A few stems dotted around the house can lift the mood just as much, maybe more, because they keep popping up throughout the day. So next time some flowers land on the doorstep, don’t rush to cram them all into one vase. Have a look in the cupboards, grab a few jam jars and see where they end up. It’s surprising how far one bunch can go.
