Maintain Home Safety with These Tips

Posted on March 11, 2026 By Becky

Your home is your sanctuary. It is the place you retreat to at the end of a busy day. It is where you raise your family, spend time with loved ones, and it is possibly the most important location in your daily life. You should feel comfortable and safe in your home, whether you are awake or asleep. Your home should also be protected when you are away. To ensure the safety of your home and family, consider the protective strategies outlined below.

Invest in a Burglar Alarm

A burglar alarm is one of the most important components of a home safety strategy. This alarm will alert you to an open door or a door that has been opened when you are not home. Burglar alarms allow you to feel safe when you are asleep, away, or at play inside your home. Look into a guide to whether burglar alarms are worth it and find the best one to provide you and your family with safe oversight.

Do Not Advertise Your Absences on Social Media

So many people live their lives online. Basically, if something does not show up in a post, it did not happen. While that is not entirely accurate, that is a general consensus. If you subscribe to that tenet, you might want to reconsider how you advertise your time away from home. After all, posting about a day out or a trip is basically an announcement to the world that your home is unoccupied and unattended. Avoid sharing any information about vacation planning or discussing an anticipated family getaway. Definitely avoid posting anything about your trip while you are away. You can share, just wait until you return home to post. That way, only the people closest to you will know you are away, and you can focus your time on the trip and the people you are with instead of burying your nose online.

If You Lose Your Keys, Change Your Locks Immediately

In life, things are lost. It just happens. Keys are one of the things that are most often misplaced to the point of never finding them again. Whether they fall out of a pocket or purse, are dropped into a drain in the parking lot or down a sewer grate, or who knows what else happens to them, it just happens. After searching for your keys and determining they are nowhere to be found, instead of grabbing the spare set by the back door and calling it good or having another copy made, it is in your best interest to change the locks. Yes, this will be an expense, but the cost of having someone with ill intentions getting ahold of your lost keys and entering your home while you are away, or even while you are home, could be far worse. Protect yourself and have every lock re-keyed right away.

Additional Tips to Maintain Home Safety

Install Motion Sensor Lighting

Outdoor lighting is one of the simplest ways to improve home security. Motion sensor lights around entrances, driveways, and gardens can deter potential intruders and make it easier for you to move around safely at night.

Get to Know Your Neighbours

Building good relationships with neighbours can be an effective safety measure. Trusted neighbours can keep an eye on your property when you’re away and alert you if anything unusual happens.

Secure Windows and Doors Properly

Doors and windows are common entry points for burglars. Make sure they are fitted with strong locks, and always double-check that they are locked before leaving the house or going to bed.

Keep Valuables Out of Sight

Avoid leaving expensive items like laptops, jewellery, or electronics visible through windows. Curtains, blinds, or careful placement of valuables can reduce temptation for opportunistic thieves.

Use Timers When You Are Away

If you are travelling or out for the evening, consider using timers for lights or smart home devices. This helps create the appearance that someone is home, which can discourage potential intruders.

FAQs About Home Safety

Are burglar alarms worth installing?

Yes. Burglar alarms can act as both a deterrent and an alert system, helping to prevent break-ins and notifying you if someone attempts to enter your home.

What should I do if I lose my house keys?

If your keys are lost and cannot be found, it is safest to change or re-key your locks as soon as possible to prevent unauthorised access.

Is it safe to post about holidays on social media?

It is generally safer to wait until you return home before sharing details about trips or holidays. Posting while you are away may indicate that your home is empty.

How can I make my home look occupied when I’m away?

Using light timers, asking a neighbour to collect mail, and keeping curtains in their normal position can help create the impression that someone is home.

What are the most common entry points for burglars?

Front doors, back doors, and ground-floor windows are the most common entry points, so these areas should be secured with strong locks and good lighting.

How often should home security systems be checked?

It’s a good idea to test alarms and security systems regularly, such as once a month, to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Home security is an important consideration to undertake. Protect your family, yourself, and your belongings by installing a burglar alarm. Take steps to avoid posting about your location before and during a trip. And always re-key your home’s locks if you lose your house keys. These small actions will have a big impact on your safety.
