Low-effort entertainment ideas for summer

Posted on June 24, 2026 By Becky

Whether you’re feeling tired from a long stint of working without a break or warm weather has left you lacking in energy, these low-effort entertainment ideas are great ways to transform lazy summer days into memorable moments. Discover options to suit every disposition, from gentle outdoor activities to classic hobbies that can be enjoyed anywhere.

  1. Screen-free classics

We began the year with headlines heralding that Brits are shifting back to screen-free entertainment in 2026, with reading topping the rankings. These classic hobbies are a great way to ensure everyday digital detox moments and slow down busy summer days.

Pick up a paperback to read at the park on while on the train to see friends. Your local library or bookshop will have a wide range of titles for you to choose from, across all genres from crime and thriller to history and non-fiction. Explore old-fashioned pastimes like knitting and modern crafting alternatives like macrame, stocking up on supplies from your nearest arts and crafts emporium, or sit down with a sketchbook or colouring book and let your mind roam freely.

  1. Audio entertainment

Sometimes you just want to close your eyes and soak up the sunshine. In these moments, audio entertainment comes into its own. Connect headphones to your smartphone and instantly access your playlists and saved audiobooks narrated by world-famous voices. You can also explore the huge range of podcasts available on streaming platforms, covering every subject you could imagine.

Audio entertainment can also make those necessary seasonal chores feel lighter. Pop on the radio or your audiobook while you’re working in the garden or cooking dinner for the family. They’ll help the time fly by while keeping your hands free. Music especially can change the mood, making an occasion out of a routine requirement.

  1. Local events

Summer gives you a good excuse to rediscover your local area, because this is when UK villages, towns and cities come alive. Find food treats and artisan products at weekend markets which are a pleasure to leisurely stroll, alone or with others. Keep an eye out for news of one-off open-air events like concerts and film showings under the stars, and the return of annual festivals.

Most museums and galleries run special exhibitions during the summer months, some of which will be free to enjoy. Other types of venues typically hosting summer events include botanical gardens and historic houses.

  1. Casual gaming

Casual gaming epitomises low-effort entertainment. Sit back and relax while enjoying short rounds of fun games that are easy to understand and play. You can access casino slot games online and browse your smartphone app store for other familiar favourites like bingo. If you’re playing with friends, you can keep it screen-free with traditional word and bluffing games or classics like charades.

Board game cafés are also rising in popularity across the nation, providing the perfect environment for collaborative or competitive play.

  1. Gentle sports

Make the most of the summer weather without feeling overwhelmed by the heat by indulging in gentle sports, either solo, with your partner or as part of a group. Summer is the best time to be by the water, so identify safe spots for outdoor swimming, from lakes to lidos, and relaxed watersports like paddle-boarding. Still too much effort? Recline in a punt on the river and let someone else guide you along the water.

Non-water-based options include padel, the social sport taking the world by storm because it lowers the physical and technical demands of racket sports while remaining fun to practise and play. Walking and cycling remain the simplest options because they require very little preparation. Unwind with walks in the cooler mornings and evenings or escape into the countryside on bikes. When cycling, ensure you’re prepared with the necessary safety equipment and plan routes in advance to avoid busy roads.
