Put locks on your doors and windows

That’s because these are often easier targets than front doors that have dead bolts installed and multiple latching points. Even if you have windows right now, you can get aftermarket solutions that will allow them to lock, so you don’t need to worry about that. The cost is relatively low, especially compared to the price of being burgled. 

Reinforce your doors

Another low-effort tactic is to reinforce your doors. You can just add bigger deadbolts and longer screws or improved strike plates. Again, these are small upgrades but they can make a big difference to how easily criminals can force your door open during an attempted burglary. It makes things like kick-ins much harder if you have proper locks in place. 

Get an electric gate

Getting electric gate systems is another option. These are a bit more high-tech and require a large upfront payment, but they can be useful if you have people coming in and out of your property all day long. Electric gates can determine who comes in and out, and they often come with things like cameras and pressure pads to determine whether vehicles or people are turning up. They can also be fitted out with audio systems and microphones so you can talk to whoever is at the gate. 

Install motion-activated lighting

Motion-activated lighting is more low-hanging fruit for your property. Lights simply turn on when they detect movement or intruders nearby. The nice thing about modern lights is that they can often tell the difference using A.I. between animals and human intruders. These are particularly helpful if you live in a rural area where foxes or raccoons are often passing nearby. 

Add visible security cameras

Adding visible security cameras is another thing that you can do to act as a deterrent. These are useful for encouraging criminals to move on to an easier target somewhere else. What’s more, you can also connect them to security services that will be immediately alerted and provide assistance. 

Secure your Wi-Fi

The last thing you’ll want to do to improve the security of your home is to secure your Wi-Fi system. Make sure it has proper password encryption that you change regularly so nobody can hack into your network or accounts. Check for things like WPA3 encryption if available. Make sure you hide your network name.
