Is Your Home As Safe As It Could Be?

Posted on August 22, 2025 By Becky

If you are keen to make sure that you are raising your children in a home that is suitable for them, then one of the main things to consider here is safety. Having a safe home is essential, and it’s the kind of thing that is going to be hugely important for you to bear in mind. If you are happy to try and improve this, there are a lot of considerations you might want to make, and it’s something that you should definitely think about from a number of angles.

In this post, we are going to consider what you can do to try and make your home as safe as it could be. As long as you have done the following, it should mean that your home is much safer, and that you are going to be in a much better position. Let’s take a look and see what you might do to get this right.

Secure Against Break-Ins

Although it’s not actually that likely or that common, break-ins are probably one of the first things you think of when you are trying to ensure your home is protected. It’s definitely a good idea to make it as hard as possible for intruders to get into your property, just in case you should become a target of that kind of action. And as it happens, there are quite a lot of things you can do to help secure against break-ins more effectively and successfully.

For instance, you should consider your entrances, all of them, and whether or not they are properly protected. That means you want solid core doors with deadbolts, as they are much harder to force open and more or less impossible to pick. Don’t forget the back door, garage, and any other entrances that someone could use.

In a similar way, you should check the windows and make sure that you are locking them, that the locks are effective and strong, and especially for the ground-level windows of course most of all. You should consider adding in some shatter-resistant film or security bars in more vulnerable areas, though be aware that this is not always necessary and you might not like the aesthetic, so it’s a balancing decision that you just need to make.

Beyond that, it’s also wise to ensure that you are making good use of lighting. Motion-activated outdoor lights in general are going to help with deterring intruders, and you’ll find that having one or two interior lights turned on by a timer can help to make it look like your home is occupied even when it isn’t. The combination of both of these kinds of lights can be very effective in making your home much less of a target in the first place.

There are of course also all sorts of smart security tech that you can use now, including cameras, video doorbells, and alarm systems. These are more affordable than ever, easy to install, and will help you in feeling that your home is much safer. All of that could really make a huge difference to how likely you are to have your home broken into.

Fire Safety

Another main consideration is always going to be fire safety, and this is something that you should definitely make sure you are thinking about if you are trying to keep your home as safe as possible. Good fire safety practices could make a world of difference, and you are going to find that it’s the kind of thing that can really help you a lot to feel safe in your home. Of course, it’s one thing knowing just how important this is and another actually making it a reality.

To aid your fire safety at home, make sure that you have smoke detectors, and install them on every level of your home. You should also test them monthly and change the batteries when necessary, which usually means around twice a year just to be safe. You should also have fire extinguishers in your home, ideally one in the kitchen and another near any bedrooms, so that you are able to deal with small fires as they occur, before they become bigger ones.

Finally, make sure that you have an escape plan for when there is a fire. Such a plan should be clear, simple to understand and agreed upon by all, and it might even be worth practicing a fire drill at least once a year to ensure that you all know what to do in such an emergency. That alone is going to make you feel a lot better and a lot safer in the home, just being that prepared.

Accident Prevention In The Home

You’ll also want to make sure that you are doing all you can to prevent accidents in the home, as this is the kind of thing that is really important for you to consider. The truth is that there are often going to be a lot of potential for accidents in the home, but avoiding them and preventing them is easier than you might think. The most common type of accident is slips and falls, which you can reduce the likelihood of in a number of ways. First, make sure you are using an anti-slip coating on your floors. Then remember to keep the floors and walkways clear at all times and clean of anything you might slip or trip on. You might also want to install grab bars in bathrooms and the like as well.

If you do that, you are going to be a lot less likely to experience those kinds of accidents. You might also want to have a plan in place for dealing with poisoning and electrical hazards, two other main types of accidents that can happen in the home. If you do that, you’re going to have a much better chance of being able to remain safe at home.
