How to plan your finances for the summer holidays

Posted on June 10, 2024 By Becky

With summer on the way, you might be getting excited at the thought of a well-deserved break in the sun or fun-packed weekends with the family. Whether you’re looking forward to a city break, an all-inclusive trip abroad or time out a little closer to home, it’s a good idea to start planning ahead of time to ensure you have the finances in place.

Start with a budget

The foundation of any successful financial plan is a well-structured budget. Use a budget planner and begin by listing all your potential expenses including travel, accommodation, food, entertainment and any special activities you want to include. Don’t forget to account for smaller costs like souvenirs, transportation within your destination and unexpected costs.

Determine what is essential and what can be adjusted or eliminated if necessary. This step will help you stay focused on your financial goals and prevent overspending.

Save in advance

It’s never too early to start saving for your summer holidays. If you know you’ll need a substantial amount of money, begin setting aside a portion of your income each month well in advance. Creating a dedicated savings account can be particularly helpful, as it allows you to track your progress and will help to avoid you dipping into these funds to cover other costs.

Look for deals and discounts

One of the best ways to reduce holiday expenses is by taking advantage of deals and discounts. Sign up for the latest updates via email to get access to special offers and consider using price comparison websites to find the best deals.

For activities and attractions, look for online discounts, coupons or package deals. Many popular tourist destinations offer discounted rates for early bookings or group tickets, which can lead to significant savings.

Sell unwanted items to increase your funds

If, like many people, you have unused items in your home, such as clothes, toys or books, you might want to think about selling them online to boost your budget. You could also consider selling any unwanted jewellery. Many people have valuable items that they no longer wear or need and you could get some cash for your lesser-worn pieces.

Selling items not only provides immediate funds but also helps declutter your home and is a practical way to turn unused assets into an enjoyable experience for your summer holidays.

Manage your finances on holiday

Once you’re away, it’s important to manage your funds carefully. Keep track of your spending to ensure you stay within your budget. Use mobile apps or keep a travel journal to record your daily expenses.

Consider using a travel credit card that offers rewards or cashback on purchases. This can help offset some of your costs but it’s important to be cautious to avoid high-interest rates and fees. If you’re travelling abroad, be sure to take into account currency exchange rates too.

Proper financial planning not only enhances your holiday experience but also ensures that you return home without the burden of debt.
